  3. This is the one you want. Tyflyz Toolz Hackle Pliers http://www.garyborger.com/2012/01/31/tyflyz-toolz-hackle-pliers/ http://www.stoneriveroutfitters.com/browse.cfm/tyflyz-toolz-hackle-tweezers/4,2808.html
  4. It would be nice to know if the capes and necks have brand like Metz, Hoffman, Whiting and a grade like 1, 2 or 3 or gold, silver, bronze, etc. If they are unbranded or if they have been partially used, you will have a hard time selling them unless a fly tier can actually examine them. I personally NEVER buy a cape or neck that I cannot examine, even new ones. Also check Ebay and search for the brand and grade that matches what you have. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=fly+tying+neck&_armrs=1&_from=R10&_ipg= http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=fly+tying+saddle&_armrs=1&_from=R7&_ipg=
  5. Here's a good article about marabou. http://www.flyfisherman.com/2013/07/14/tying-with-marabou-2/
  6. Second chance to get this book published in 1910. This is a series of essays about about fly fishing Montana at the turn of the century. http://www.amazon.com/Fly-Fishing-Wonderland-Klahowya-ebook/dp/B005LXKE9S/
  7. I think he wants then so they don't hook the bottom as much. Kind of like streamers tied on the old Mustad keel hooks.
  8. It can't be a "typical" Clouser because a typical Clouser rides hook point up. So the fly is unbalanced and we cannot tell you why or how it is unbalanced because we cannot see the fly. My suggestion is to use the correct hook specified in the pattern, and very important is to use the correct size and weight of lead eyes so it has enough mass to bring the center of mass of the fly above the shank of the hook. Then the fly must ride hook point up with the center of mass below the hook shank.
  9. These are the brushes I bought at Michaels. Get the wild brush with the flat end, 3rd from the right side. http://www.michaels.com/Essential-Long-Handle-Artist-Brushes-By-Royal-Langnickel/fa1353,default,pd.html?cgid=products-artsupplies-brushes
  10. You can try to describe what you tied but what we need is a photo.
  11. Many materials can be substituted. However, there are some materials that are unique and nothing else will do. You mention marabou. Marabou, which is a special fluffy feather, happens to be one material that has no good substitute. Most often marabou comes from domestic white turkeys and is dyed different colors but it can also come from wild turkeys, chickens and even storks. So when a pattern calls for marabou, it is best to use marabou. Dry fly hackle from roosters is another material that is very specific. When a pattern calls for dry fly hackle, there is no substitute that will give you the same performance. Peacock herl is another material that I would never try to substitute in a pattern. It is cheap and readily available and has very specific coloration and sheen. So yes, you can substitute as long as the material results in a fly that looks and performs much like the original pattern. But when you substitute something that is not like the original, it is not the same fly. It may still catch fish but it will be a different pattern.
  12. Peddler, MIcro-fibbets ARE the synthetic fibers from artist paint brushes. Like many of the items we put on flies, they are not made for fly tying. The next time you are at a Michaels or Jo-annes or Hobby Lobby, check out the fine art brushes. The tail fibers on the small parachute adams at the top of the photo below are the fibers from the artists brush.
  13. I have no idea what you re talking about. Refer us to a fly shop page or a url that has the item you are confused about.
  14. They are size 52s....... About the size of the period at the end of this sentence.
  15. I would say that a single malt with a Cuban cigar is an expensive vice........
  16. Tied by Len Halliday with his Original Vise
  17. The Sage VPS rod series is a relaunch of the Sage RPL. The RPL is a Sage classic which was made from 1989-1997. It was replaced by the RPL+. There was such demand for the original RPL that Sage used the RPL blank to make the VPS from1998 - 2005. So the RPL rod was made as a RPL or VPS from 1989 to 2005, a remarkably long run for a composite rod blank. Original RPLs were in such demand that I eventually sold my 9 ft 5 wt RPL for more than I paid. I used Cortland 333 WF 5 on my RPL so I think a standard WF line will work fine.
  18. This just came up on another BB. Story of the Adams Dry Fly by John Falk, the grandson of Len Halliday:
  19. The pattern I use is the Gary Borger Marabou Damsel Nymph that is simple and imitates both the motion and color variation of the dorsal and ventral sides of the nymph. http://www.garyborger.com/2011/04/04/marabou-damsel-nymph The difference between Gary's Patterns and others is the dark over light bicolor abdomen. Damsel nymphs are bicolor, dark over light as the following photos of naturals reveal.
  20. I would assume they are ignorant of the regulations, and would say something.
  21. It would help if guides had to display thier guide licenses on their back just like hunters do. Then it would be easy to copy the license number and report it. The public can be the eyes and ears of the wardens if they made it easy to do.
  22. Hit the guides in the pocketbook! Do guides have to be licensed in your state? If so, I would petition the state to remove the guides license for certain violations and using scents would be one of the violations. Not only that, but also fine the client and the fly shop that the guide works out of. That will stop this type of behavior. I would also make possession of scents and baits illegal when fishing in fly fishing only waters.
  23. Interesting tie Byron. When Waterwisp flies were first introduced about 20 years ago, Jim Greene, owner of Waterwisp gave some sample flies to fish. For some reason, I had a hard time hooking fish that rose to the flies. From learning more about the fly, you need to delay on the strike a bit longer than the normal point down dry fly. You may find the same thing. http://www.waterwisp.com/
  24. Yes. Adjust the size of the foam for the weight of the hook.
