  1. I'm kind of like tjm -- I don't advertise for a company, but I do wear a hat and/or t-shirts for non-profits that I volunteer with. I've often wondered how much a decal damages a paint job when removed. License plate holders with dealer's name gets the round bucket. I got into a disagreement with a dealer about their dealership decal and almost refused to take possession of a new car. I would automatically reject a used car that had decals/pictures/ stickers unless they were removed without damage.
  2. Planning a trip to Pigeon Forge at the end of October or first week of Nov. and would appreciate any info or recommendations on flies I should have with me, fish species, etc. Would also like info regarding small streams with easy publc access in that area as I can no longer bushwack or hike moderate distances due to heart conditions. Will only have a couple of days to fish, and prefer wading to boats. Thanks guys
  3. Vicrider:: " For those who knock some of us who have had rods and reels costing more than some of us old folks first house, if we can afford it and take pride and care of our equipment, why should it bother someone who fishes a lowball combo off the shelf at Wal-Mart? If you're happy with your outfit and I'm happy with mind can't we all just get along. You might meet me on the water with a $3,000 bamboo and the $500 Hardy reel or one of my 50+ year old Shakespeare Wonderods and a Medalist, or perish the thought one of my old Perrine automatic reels. Let's just bs about the fish and the flies and the gear without concern for the high or low cost of it." I couldn't agree more. Off the original subject of the post: But would add why does it bother someone that I fish nymphs instead of dries (or the other way around), streamers vs emergers, why do some people feel the need to knock a tenkara rod instead of the readily accepted western style rod. At my age I've seen many fads or styles come and go and the best part of fishing is meeting up with someone on the river lying about how big our last fish that got away really was. 4. Like rstaight, built a jig some years ago. I mainly use mono, either 2 lb or 4 lb. I have a few thread leaders but generally use mono. I adapted my jig by extensions and movable pegs so I can do a 5', 8', 12' or 15'. I use the 8' more than the 5' while the 12' and 15' leaders are primarily for my Tenkara rods. I put about 4 or 5' of tippet on. Different ways to add colors, depending on what you want, although I haven't used a 2 color for quite some time.

Another war story. Had a nose bleed in 2004 in Ft. Myers that wouldn't stop. Went to the ER where they first packed it, making it worse, then they inserted a balloon. After getting back to CO, was infected with a staph that started growing on my artificial heart valve that was put in my heart in 2000. Result was 10 days of powerful antibiotics injected every 4 hrs round the clock. Then another open heart surgery to take out the infected valve and put in another one, followed by another 5 weeks of the same antibiotics every 4 hrs round the clock. While in the hospital the antibiotics were so strong that they have to change the IV site every 3 to 4 injections. Nice thing about the antibiotics after surgery was that they put in a pic line and I had a computer controlled device I wore in a fanny back round the clock which automatically gave me my dosage every 4 hours. Had to change the med bag every other day, which sure beat the hospital injections. Staph infections are no fun and can be deadly.
  6. I never have. I have always used hand stripping, felt it gave me better line control if fish needed to run.
  7. Watching the video brought back memories of many years gone by. Can remember going to the ole Woolworth store in western Kansas to select my poles. I probably spent more time making sure I got just the right pole then I now spend when buying a new rod. Couldn't use any ole string either, had to be the right stuff as did the bobber. Caught many many bullheads, small catfish and an occasional snapping turtle.
  8. My guess as a substitute would be something along the lines of a UV product. I did find some flies I tied way back when but did not use the enamel on them. I used it primarily on plugs as a hard coat on top of paint.
  9. Dug out my bottle from my old Herters stuff. Contains Toluol and petroleum Distillates. Directions on bottle says it is a high gloss finish; dipped, sprayed or used for finishing heads on flies. As I remember it, was used after head cement for a high gloss finish which head cement didn't do at that time. Was also used as a final finish on wood plugs after paint job. What I have came with a kit for painting plugs.
  10. I dug mine out and could not find any markings to indicate manufacturer or model. Mine is made of aluminum and dates back to mid 60s when I ordered a bunch of stuff from Herters.
  11. Have one that looks just like it. Mine is from Herters and from the mid 60s. I started tying late 60s and was one of my first bobbins. as was the other bobbin style pictured by flytire. Not at home until next week but will look at the bobbin for any information when I get home.
  12. Flat Rock Native: "Common sense and Common courtesy solves many problems, causes few problems, and costs Nothing.. Just sayin' " Poopdeck: "….. Everybody needs to lighten up while driving. Stuffs going to happen so be prepared AND willing to stop if necessary." Couldn't agree more with these 20 statements. Two things we stressed to the attendees in Driver Safety classes: Anticipate, don't hesitate: and Always be ready to give up the right a-way, never take or demand the right a-way.
  13. My bad newbie@this :::: I should have said Lake Granby instead of Grand Lake. You can also fish the headwaters of the Colorado River just above Grand Lake.
  14. Go around the south end of Grand Lake to the Monarch Lake parking. You can spin fish (or fly fish) Monarch or fish the small stream below the spillway of Monarch. Stream is small enough that you can fish the whole stream from shore. Spillway and stream are a short walk from parking lot.
  15. Agree with the nose oil and taking apart the rod behind the knees. Also need to clean out the female ferrules on occasion; I use one of the BIG pipe cleaners (toy section of dollar stores, craft store or Walmart). Have 4 bamboo rods, 2 of which date back to late 30's early 40's and have never had corrosion problems and generally use the knee take apart trick even when the sections are not real tight.
  16. While I don't disagree that the jet skier was in the wrong, his actions in Colorado would have been a violation of DOW rules and regulations while your actions were also in the wrong and would have constituted assault, a criminal action, and the cuts you would use against him would have also been evidence that you acted with intent. Had the hooks of the lure dug into him deeply there could have been severe damage.
  17. The third time, I cast across his bow. I was fishing a big top water lure (baitcaster and braided line). The line drug across his arms and chest and cut him. Fortunately for him, the lure flipped out and away from him. When he started yelling about calling the cops, I said, "Go ahead. You're in the wrong, and the cuts only prove you were too close to me."
  18. I use them. I have been quite happy with my purchases; mainly hooks and beads.
  19. Just thought I would add a stocker trout picture. This was a brood stock that was stocked for a kids fishing derby -- not caught on a fly rod however.
  20. Does anyone know about a Humphreys reel, Model 4A? Apparently made in mid 40's and is a spinning reel designed for a fly rod. Would like to find out bout it and what it may be worth (or not worth). Also a Shakespeare "Honor Made, Honor Sold" bamboo fly rod, model 1623 (I think). Was a 9 ft but apparently tip section was broken and is now an 8 1/2 f.
  21. I don't usually weigh in on these discussion but need to give my opinion. I do use both a western fly rod and a tenkara rod and enjoy both in the situations I use them. From my research on the tenkara style of fishing, it dates back to very old Japanese style of fishing that was designed to fish small mountainous streams in very fast water. The original style would be somewhat similar to tight line nymphing of today, only short drifts. Is it fly fishing???; wasn't that long ago that if you weren't using "dry flies" you weren't fly fishing. Lot of comparison to "cane poles"; in my opinion, having used cane poles, comparing a tenkara rod to a cane pole is like comparing a 1 wt to an 8 or 9 wt. Both get the job done but differently. I still remember spending time at the old 5&10 carefully selecting just the right cane pole, came in 1 piece and very long, not the 2 or 3 piece "canes" of today. (happen to be 74 years young). Not trying to convince anyone that tenkara is right for them, I think it is a personal choice. Mike, my first tenkara rod; 13' with a 6/3 action cost me around fifty bucks, my 2nd came off ebay for around 30. my 2 cents.
  22. I Think the Fly Tyer issue was Summer 2007. Also; Google "DIY Dubbing Brush Machine" --- there are a couple of plans there
  23. Vicrider; Thank you for hosting this and all of your work. This was my first swap and when I opened the package from Wetsock my reaction was "WOW" what a fantastic set of flies. All of the pictures I took came out blurry so will have to attach pictures later.
