  1. Keep posting these, the local trout here will love them
  2. Greetings TX, this is the place if your primary vice involves a vise. Those are some very good ties and don't worry about slimming down those Clousers, the toothy fish will take care of that.
  3. Greetings, this is the place for enthusiastic tiers. Mountains of information here and entertaining cast of characters
  4. Nice mini-tutorial on eye painting, Bob Lemay
  5. Welcome, indeed this place rocks. It is like the graduate school of tying and the " professors" are all very generous with their time and talents.
  6. yep...Yep those are on my "to do" list just need to go shopping.Thx everyone for all the suggestions so far. Here are two patterns that are 1.75 inches, one - more silver- tied with Hackle Flash purple and the other with Gold Polar Chenille

  8. Just tied this up... could work. I think this one nails it, good effort
  9. Search Fathead on this site and you will see pictures of the baitfish and myriad suggestions to imitate. If it is the same critter of which you query we did a thread a couple of years back.
  10. Good job, this pattern gives me some ideas for topwater pike and bass available around here. How durable are these when hit by toothy beasts?
  11. I will gladly join in. With regular office work increasing recently I need some extra motivation to get to the tying bench once per week. Some of these concepts are very intriguing. I will post weeks one and two later and get busy on week three.
  12. Very strong start to January 2014, happy new year on the tying benches
  13. Pink Wonder Variant- Kenduardo's Poly Stinger Worm - in the tank- Attached
  14. There are a tremendous number of options, so many that I think my best advice is to check out feather-craft.com's listing of body materials both natural and synthetic, which should give you some ideas. There is also a synthetic called pseudo-marabou and I have some but have not tested it. Don't totally refrain from using marabou, you may need it in very clear waters. Natural marabou is a fabulous material but it's greatest strength is also it's greatest weakness because it has great motion simply because the feathers are delicate. I use marabou in some pike flies for this reason knowing full well that they will get poor mileage and will need to be replaced. and the bucktail recommendation is a good one. Mepps and others have been using bucktail on some spinner models longer than I have been alive and I am getting pretty old..........

  16. My daughter started at age 5 with a Cabela's 7-6 & 5 wgt, still using it for some trips 15 years later. Overlining a 4 wgt maybe even a better idea. I also firmly agree with the postings above that a kid needs to actually catch fish and doing so will cement every concept you may be trying to teach. Doesn't matter how big or what species, panfish, bass, brookies, anything easy and plentiful to catch. Nothing succeeds like success, IMHO.
  17. Wish I could get there right now, striper on the fly has been a long-term goal for some time
  18. Everyone's suggestions above very good, IMHO. I also recommend that you read a Hatches magazine article by Bill Loehr entitled "How Many Flies?" in which the author suggests you could get by with 4 basic patterns. It may help you prioritize your efforts. Personally, I favor emergers and cripples for still water applications, and soft hackles and tung bead heads- depending on how fast the moving water is moving.
  19. That will catch you plenty of fish, next try a little CDC, and you will have one of the most effective trout flies ever, when they are looking up.
  20. It weighs .2 ounce on a postal scale, but in tanks sinks so it should be called a diver when using ammo cases for rattle. Tied on a plastic tube with manufactured rattle and some poly yarn & foam plug it floats like a perfect slider and does not register on the scale. Either should cast fine if one doesn't need a lot of false casts to hit the target zone
