Inconnu, a whole hide. Wow, I'm just hoping to find someone to donate a square foot or so. Nice score!

I worked for a while today at the bench & I've managed to get a few tied up. Still more to do before I mail them in, but boy, it's been a while since I worked with deer hair. I think I've lost my touch. I know the others will look better than mine. Hope you guys aren't too disappointed.

not a chance BB. I can already see myself catching a 4-5 lb mamma largemouth with your critter this spring. No disapointment there :D

Dude, trust me, your's won't be as bad as mine, I promise. I just hope no one sends mine back to me :P . They told me when I was starting out, and I feel like, in some ways, I still am, that part of the reason for these swaps was to help you develop as a tier (tyer?). I hope all of you see it that way, especially when you see my bugs.

I will say that my bugs do typically catch fish, and to me that's all that matters. I just don't want to disappoint you guys with my "ugly but effective", function over form bugs, so I'm letting you know up front.

Your right on terry. swaps can help alot. just think, after tying 12 or so of the same deer pattern your going to figuar little tricks out, find things that work and things that don't. The finished product will be fine, actully better than what you could do before. Now the same cannot be said for spelling. thats why i never liked spelling and took so quikly to swapping flies :D

Oatka, somewhere downstairs I have a 1/4 of a cured whitetail hide. PM me your mailing address and I'll send you what you need. :)

Many of the swaps I have participated in are a little out of my comfort zone, having come from an area full of fish that were highschool dropouts and thus easy pickings. I think doing this is forcing me to become better at some aspects of tying I have avoided to date. :)

Terry I really don't believe that you could disappoint me no matter what you think, I suspect most of us feel the same, so relax enjoy the wonderful hobby of insect bondage! :P

Hey guys, since we were on the subject of learning through swaps; I thought i would share a little trick i learned while tying this weekend.

It involves deerhair bugs that leave the rearmost tips of deerhair intact to serve as a skirt. (the tips in the first clump you tie in)

I was finding it hard to keep from cutting these skirt hair while trimming the body. heres what i came up with.

starting with the first clump.

Align tips, measure out and tie in.

Now I cut/trim the forward half down. This will leave a gap between the skirt and the reat of the body.

I also trim the tips off the next clump of hair befor tying them in. this makes it easier the visualize any stray hairs that do not belong in the skirt. They will be blunt trimmed ends.

Now you can tie, and compact / tie, and compact....ect... ect....

And you'll be left with a nice trimmed gap around the skirt.

I also found it much easier the whip finish the head if i trimm the first few hairs first.

And again a shot of the gap that allows you to trim easily around the skirt

And the finished fly with a full, intact skirt.

i hope you guys find this tip helpfull,
