Stillwater Swap

Recommended Posts

I would say that a good portion of my fly fishing is done in still waters, meaning lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. One of the things that I have learned when tying patterns that I use for stillwaters is that movement, action, and the suggestion of life is critical. Most of my stillwater patterns use rabbit fur, LSF, marabou, and other wavy action packed material. The reason being is that lake fish can take all the time in the world to look at, inspect, and scrutinize your fly vs. river fish which usually don't have that same amount of time. That's why I feel the suggestion of life is so important.

Some Suggestions for stillwater patterns are:

Chironomidae and other midges

Leaches, bunny leaches, and breathing streamers

Damselfly and dragonfly nymphs

If you have a pattern that you have used with success in stillwaters for various trout species, especially cutthroats, feel free to jump in on this swap.

Just FYI, a great pattern is the seal bugger. Denny Rickards devised this one and it is deadly on the lakes.

Same basic set-up as a wooly bugger with 3 minor differences. Use less marabou in the tail, substitute chenile for SLF or some other wavy dubbing, and only wrap the hackle around 3 times (Denny says 4 but I have found that 3x works great). In still water fishing, less bulk and more movement is the ticket. That's why he uses fewer wraps and the SLF because the dubbing will pulsate more and with the minimal hackle, the fish can see the added pulsations better.
