utyer 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2011 I for one, must have missed this. This is certianly a "classic" hopper pattern, and the first one I ever learned. It still fishes well, and is easy enough to tie.
flytire 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2011 an older pattern with a not so sexy name doesnt catch many fishermen!
utyer 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2011 Well, I can tell you it catches plenty of fish. It put a lot of fish on the end of my leader. Of course with out 4 layers of foam, and a bobber lashed to the top, it doesn't float a lot of split shot like people use in a hopper dropper rig. If you JUST have a simple effective pattern to fish as a grass hopper, this is a great one.
oldtrout58 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2011 Thanks for the memories. That is the first fly I could tie that consistently caught fish. It works pretty good as a Golden Stonefly imitation too. I probably haven't tied one of those since 1974! I'm going to rectify that ASAP.
BBBruce77 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2011 An interesting variation is to wrap lead in under the body and shred the wings so they look bedragled and just dead drift it through the deeper holes and under cut banks. Seems the big guys laying in those places find dead hoppers to be an appealing snack.
HalS 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2011 I'm going to have to tie some of these. they look great.
Ruffells311 0 Report post Posted December 6, 2011 A good variation would be to spin some deer hair for the head instead of hackle too! Nice looking fly. Ima have to make a few for some bass in the spring
novabass 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2011 What size of hook should I use for this pattern if I was fishing for bass?
