robow7 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2012 Have any ideas how I might get a Zoo Cougar fly to sink just a little more than the standard version without going to a full sinking or sink tip line? Would Gehrke's Xink Wet Fly Dressing work or am I just forced to add some lead wraps to the shank? As always, thanks for your input.
SBPatt 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2012 You could make some mini sink-tips from sections of lead core trolling line (whipped loops on both ends); did this for shad fishing and it works pretty well. You could also slide a cone on the leader and then tie the ZC. Rub a little stream mud on the fly's head helps a bit, too. Regards, Scott
JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2012 Get it wet. Squeeze the deer hair head in the water like a sponge, it will absorb quite a bit of water if you let it. You can use ram's wool instead of deer hair if you want. It soaks up water and sinks. Tailor your flies to the way YOU want them to fish, not the exact way someone prints a recipe. Their recipe works great for the way THEY like it.
mvendon 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2012 Hi robow7, Try adding dumbell lead eyes just before any of the spun hair, or hair collar is tied in. If you need more weight, wrap lead around the shank on the back part of the fly. It will make it like a neutral bouyant lure instead of being weighed down at the head end and fished un-naturally. I add some red around the lead eyes tied figure eight to immitate the red gills too. Regards, Mark
riffleriversteelheadslayer 0 Report post Posted October 2, 2012 a split shot 8 inches up the leader works

flytire 0 Report post Posted October 3, 2012 add lead wraps to the hook shank do not compact the deer as much, leave it loosely packed
FlyFishin'Jam 0 Report post Posted October 3, 2012 First use a longer leader set-up. Cast more upstream, and do an initial big upstream mend, as it is being pushed by the current you may have to add another couple of mends before you are at depth. With good presentation you would be surprised how deep you can run an unweighted fly.
