Crackaig 0 Report post Posted July 4, 2014 For a while I've been trying to figure out how to make soft detached bodies from Nymph Skin. After a lot of experimenting I think I've sussed it. Cheers, C.

Crackaig 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2014 Thanks guys. I wanted something a little more resilient to teeth than foam for detached bodies, but still a flexible. Years ago I heard a talk given by an respected angling author, about how fish will reject large hard flies much faster than softer ones. It has always stuck with me. Nymph Skin seemed to offer the best solution to this, but how to make a detached body from it. I tried various ways of tying it on a needle but always came back to the problem of being unable to get the finished body off the needle intact. The problem is that both ends of the nymph skin need to be attached to the hook. In the end the solution was to to tie the body directly on the hook around a mount of some kind. For the Mayfly it is the tails. They are a larger version of Microfiberts called Synthetic Quills (Virtual Nymph) They are about 4 inches long in the pack and much stouter. For the stone fly a wider mount is needed so I used 4 lengths of mono stuck side by side with Diamond Flex UV resin. That gives the flatter profile to the finished body. Tie the mount and nymph skin on top of the hook shank. Grip the mount an inch or so from the tie in point. Give the Nymph Skin a good stretch and put it the same grip as the mount. Run your thread up the mount and the nymph skin together. Make several tight turns at the limit of the body and run back to the hook shank. Try not to create a fold in the Nymph Skin. while doing this. Then wind the nymph skin back to the hook and tie off. A coat of Diamond Flex secures the whole thing and doesn't stiffen the body. It also holds the tails spread on the Mayfly. Its a bit of a fiddly job, tying up both hands. As I have no one here to operate the camera, neither do I have 3rd and 4th hands to do it myself, you will understand I can't photograph the process. However I've just discovered there is a time lapse setting on my Nikon, that may be a solution, watch this space! Cheers, C.
shoebop 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2014 They look great Crackaig. Are you going to fish em or look at em? I do a similar process with foam strips for extended bodies. But yours look nicer.
