  1. Hows it gon !!!! I have lived in Connecticut for the last five years.I was born and raised in Dalrymple Ayrshire.Moved to Prestwick in later years. I go home every year to fish the Clyde, the Tweed and the Tummel for trout, and stuff masel wi fish suppers !!! Awra best, Harry Wallace.
  2. The sizes you mention are perfect. best tied on a heavy grub hook(curved) Tie the bug completely with fine copper wire, using a ceramic bobbin gives best results. You can vary the weight of the bug by wrapping lead on the hook first or leaving out.Look at the way peaty man describes the use of tying with copper wire on his pheasant tail nymph.... you will find it under cold water species.he is a very good friend of mine and a superb fly dresser.he has published many articles and ties amazing grayling bugs.it would be worth your while contacting him for very useful information. Harry.
  3. contacy davy wotton and dave whitlock on the white river.davy wotton will defineteley know what they are.they run the american school of fly fishing. harry
  4. dark stoneflies, small 14 ...16 hendrickson emergers(dark snow shoe is good) prince nymphs, gold bead hares ear and pheasant tails all do well for me in Connecticut rivers and dark colored wooly buggers.I would assume they would work good where you are cheers, Harry.
  5. Also i am back home to Scotland 18th February for two weeks.i will pick some up. there is always plenty there. If you have a problem sourcing her in US i can post you some if you wish,on my return, just let me know either way. Harry.
  6. Gregor,go to www.waderson.com go to tackle shop, go to fly tying. they sell killer bug yarn. good luck , Harry.
  7. "Lureflash" a UK based company used to sell a killer bug substitute wool. I tied with it and caught a lot of trout and grayling back in scotland. try any craft shop for mending wool in a beige shade that comes close to chadwicks original. I own three killer bugs, two grey goose nymphs, and three pheasant tail nymphs that were all tied by Frank Sawyer.Once i get the digital set up i will post pics for anyone interested in seeing true originals from Sawyers hands. good luck, harry wallace.
  8. Take a close look at the Law vise....a very close look!!! there is nothing out there comes close to it. look at most of the worlds best tyers, thats what they have!!! It aint cheap either but you will never use or need anything else..
  9. Get your hands on some surgical epidural tubing if you can....its the biz .... Look for forum member "Peaty Man" He is most active in Salmon and steelhead flies. He is a professional tyer and uses this stuff to great effect on nymphs, emergers buzzers etc. He should be able to give you some info.... '
  10. You wil find Frogs Fanny at nearly any decent fly store...I took some home to Scotland for some of my buddies, they loved it!!! Only thing is, a fanny in Scotland is the name given to a ladies most intimate private parts....i can still here them laughing!!!!
  11. Tie up some cdc shuttlecock emergers.... they are widely used in the United Kingdom, especially Scotland where the midge are prolific....I fish them here in the US now and found them to be one of my best flies when midge or tiny olives are emerging. They are so simple and quick to tie.look on the net for shuttlecock midge.shuttlecock emerger etc. good luck, Harry Wallace.
  12. You can buy great hand made hooks from Belvoirdale products in Pensylvania . they are sold under "Gaelic hooks" all handmade in redditch england. The owners name is Grahame Maisy. They are not made by Partridge. They do a fantastic range of trout and salmon hooks.Look for "Gaelic hooks" on the net. Good luck Harry Wallace.
  13. Housatonic River Outfitters Cornwall Bridge Connecticut keeps all the color sof the yarn Gary used.He actually lived in Ct and fished the Housatonic river regularly. You will see reference to this in his books. The Housatonic is my local water and come near May there is prolific cadis pupae activity going on. The sparkle pupa is deadly at this time.I have played around with different rig set ups with other pupae patterns fished along with the sparkle pupa, just to see what the fish take regularly. The sparkle pupa especially tied cream or light tan will produce hits all the time! I personally think his yarn works differently from any other yarn.tons of tiny gas bubbles attach to the material creating a very similar appearance to the caddis pupa when they are darting around. His research in this area was very detailed, when researching for his book "caddis flies".That's good enough for me. Good luck, Harry Wallace.
  14. I fish the Delaware upper Ny state a lot ...terrific hatches of BWO. i catch many good fish using a cdc shuttlecock emerger.simple to tie as well. Look at Leon Links book Tying with cdc.there is some reference to shuttlecock patterns in there. Also a nice pattern by Hans Van Klinken ,The Once And Away emerger. This will give you a better profile for the fly.I do not put a body on the fly, only the right shade of dubbing at the thorax area .You will tie the cdc plumes over the thorax with the tips of the cdc facing forward of the eye. This is also a killer midge pattern. Tie them as small as you want to. I have lost count of the good trout taken on this simple fly. Good luck, HarryWallace.
  15. Defineteley ,the quill from the eye area...the segmentation stands out much better. Try turkey biots for your body as well.take a look at some of Rene Harrop's patterns using biots. You will find them in his book Trout Hunter. Good Luck, Harry.
