  1. Have you ever done any fly fishing before, if not I would recommend if you can find a local guide, club or fellow fly fishers to assist you with your casting and other aspects of the sport kind of like a mentor. The saltwater section here contains many patterns for redfish and snook, other sources are youtube just do a search on there for snook or redfish fly's and you will find a lot. Everyone is different in how they learn but the videos watching someone tie the fly helps a lot.
  2. These are just a couple of pictures from my recent trip to Brazil. I took a lot of pictures but these are just a couple from the trip. A couple shots of the local variety owls, some monkeys and a local water fall. I was really hoping to get some pictures of the wild Macaw's but they would not cooperate maybe the next trip. All of the wildlife pictures were taken from about 75 yards away at a hotel that was on the Brazilian and Bolivian border. The waterfall is one of the few left in the local area after they started building a Hydroelectric Power Plant.
  3. Kirk if you dont mind how much lead are you using on these along with the bead for the deeper water.
  4. that is an excellent SBS thank you very much for sharing it and your extra tips to tie them quicker.
  5. For the last 2 years I have worked and lived on a military base in Kosovo. In the first photo what you cannot see is the mountain in the background, about 5 miles away we have a 9000 foot mountain that has been snow covered for about a month and a half. This is our first snow here for the year though.
  6. This is what I woke up to this morning not my idea of a good time, but it is beginning to look like Christmas.
  7. Have you ever used this pack of hooks without breaking them prior or is this a new pack. To me it sounds like you have a bad batch of hooks. Tying a size 18 I cannot imagine you are using thread with a high enough breaking strength to snap the hook. If you were bending them I would say yes to much torque but breaking them sounds more like a bad set.
  8. Thank you for the information. I was wondering about the Loon product but after reading about the Diamond Hard I ordered some of that to try. I was using the CCG but was just curious about the Loon since it seemed like a good value for the amount you get.
  9. Question for all of you that have tried the different UV Resins, are they all pretty much the same or different. I have used the CCG and really like the quick drying of the product. I am wondering about the Loon product right now it is on special with our sponsor. You seem to get a lot more product for your money with the loon then the others. So that makes me wonder if there is a difference or just better value.
  10. I do not know how accurate this guy is but it is an interesting read and makes sense from what I remember from my Marine Biology class. article
  11. I am looking for a dubbing brush machine, I know that I will receive that they are easy to make. I do not have access to many of the things needed to make one that will work correctly. I have looked many places and have not found a site that lists them for sale with a price and a way to by them. Has anyone seen a location that lists them for say if you could either give me the name of the site or a link to the site.
  12. I would like to join also if you will have me. One question though is it 1 fly or 10 flies to be sent.
  13. I would be interested in this but have never done the swaps before. My problem is usually the deadline for them to be due to the SM. For me shipping takes upwards of 3 weeks to send or receive.
  14. I am not really looking at any 1 type of fly but was more thinking of putting them in all flies with a longer tail. Like on the seducer or deceivers have the long hackles by adding in the long loop when tying the fly it will allow you to add a stinger hook if needed. I guess what I need to know is if you think the loop of fireline would impact the action of the fly.
  15. I have a question about larger fly's and stinger hooks. I am thinking about starting to tie in a loop of some sort of braided line to allow the addition of a stinger hook. I do not want to necessarily add a stinger hook to all of them but I want to have the option of adding one when needed like when fish are striking short. My question is does anyone do this add the loop in when the fly is tied to allow a stinger later if wanted.
  16. not sure if this is the one you are talking about but here is a SBS for a Birds Nest pattern. Bird Nest
  17. I dont know where you are located exactly. Have you ever been to the Fins, Feathers and Fur stores they have one in Cleveland, Ashland and Canton. I have never been in the fishing section to see what they have for fly tying. Another option would be if you are close expo
  18. I am not Kirk but here is his youtube video making the spoons
  19. Thank you for all of the recommendations guys. The reason that I asked about this is it is one of the places I order from and wanted to know if anyone had tried it or thought it would work. With me working and living in Kosovo everything has to be ordered in and takes about a month to get here. I really wish it was a simple as running to the corner store to pick something up to try.
  20. I know that this has been discussed many times. My question is has anyone ever tried the EVA foam that is used in making Fishing Rod handles. The blank form seems to be a decent size for the money but I wanted to know if anyone had used it or tried it before I buy it and wait the month to get here. This is what I am talking about. EVA Foam
  21. I just signed up for the Stockard and Feather Craft catalog are there any others I should send for also.
  22. Thank you everyone for the information. I ordered the CD for the book already so that will be here in a couple weeks to a month. I will try to get some of the Catalogs also but I usually do not have very much luck with Magazines or Catalogs being delivered here. I know it is hard to believe but there are thieves somewhere within the US Postal system. Most of my hobby type magazines I have subscriptions to I receive every other month at best even though they are a monthly magazine.
  23. I just looked up the The Fly Tier's Benchside Reference and it has a couple options The Book, cd or both. Is the CD just a copy of the book in digital form or is it a supplement. Should I consider both or is one or the other ok.
  24. I know that with this hobby there is a ton of information out there. What I am asking is there a book, website or other information source that I can find basically what all the different materials in fly tying are used for. What I am meaning is what are they typically used for hackles, blood quills, wooly bugger and various other feathers or materials. I know that it is probably all available on this site with a lot of searching but I would like to have a book or something. Is there like a fly tying for Dummies or a Complete guide to fly tying or something that will explain most of the things, I know that there will never be one complete source but a major source would be great. I really wish I had a fly shop or experienced tier close but I do not so I have to learn myself and just looking for a source to help keep buying the wrong things. This is all coming up now because I just tried to organize some and discovered I have 4 types of marabou and only 1 of them I use regularly so I would like to try to eliminate this from happening.
  25. Thank you Nick there is a coat of CCG Flex up to the point where the raveling starts.
