  1. The click pawl, not the disc. It's my favorite reel, English made. My fishing buddy recently bought a new CFO III, made in America. It's a nice reel, looks to be quality made. Sounds like my English reel, and meets all the same specs. It's black, while my reel is grey. Parts aren't interchangeable. I like mine better. I've got another clicker Orvis, made in England but not machined like the CFO. Glad to see clickers are still on the market. Those are my favorites.
  2. Very neat. I saw one about 4 or 5 years ago, similar to the OP, at least dimensionally. Or so it seems. I wanted one but couldn't find one. A friend of mine is a professional woodworker, and he built me one, very nice. It's a bit heavier, made of hardwood. I haven't used it for about when it was new. It's beautiful and handy for transporting the vise and other materials. It's overbuilt, but that's OK.
  3. Well, I listed it on the Classifieds. I'd rather sell it to folks I trust. I hate to sell it but it's just sitting around, unused.
  4. What should I ask for it? It's in excellent shape, I just have problems with my forearm. Pedestal . I don't know what a used one will sell for. Also, what are the best venue for selling a vise? Ebay?
  5. I know of a Kayak boater who carried a fake fish in his boat. Whenever he saw a fisherman, he would ask "Catching anything?" When the fisherman answered, he'd say "Let me check it out." He then would roll the kayak and come up with the fish in his teeth. You got to find fun where you can.
  6. A woman hears a knock at the door, opens it and it's a State Trooper. He say, "M'am, have you got a picture of your husband?" She goes into the back room and comes back with the photo. The Trooper looks at it, and says. "Ma'am I hate to tell you this but it looks like your husband got hit by a truck." She says, "I know, but he's a good provider."
  7. I have heard good things about the Orvis premium kit at $200. Except for the vise, which has gotten bad reviews. I understand that the kit has videos, which should help, if you must have a kit. For a cheap but good vise, I recommend the Maxcatch Rotating vise, which can be had for $37 on the web. It's a very good vise and easy to use. I've got one I like to tie on it every once in a while. I paid $50 for mine. I have to admit while not the best choice for a kit, there's something neat about buying a kit if you're just beginning. It's like Christmas, but not the best way to go. I bought an Orvis kit about 30 years ago and it was useless because of lots of stuff one could never use. So apparently they're much better reportedly than the one I got. The idea above about targeting a species is good advice, but if you just want to tie, pick a fly or flies you want to tie and go for it. That's the cheapest and most logical way to go and you can go from there.
  8. I'm still in shock. I wish I'd kept more than I did. I sold half of that number in handguns. Some nice examples but no to-die-for guns. I figured it's time to sell the guns so my daughter won't give them away when I croak.
  9. I'm a recovering gun-holic. Thursday was a week ago, I sold the balance of my firearms, a total of 40. I'm still sad, but getting over it very slowly. My guns were getting out of control.
  10. My TRV is approaching Not So Much Used because of my forearm. I tie now on a Renzetti Traveler, which does whatever I need it to do. My TRV is lying on my desk right now waiting for my arm to get better. The TRV is a fine vise, based on the LAW vise and will tie down to as far as I can go.
  11. I think I recognize that stream from The Blair Witch Project.
  12. I'll be 78 next month. Getting old is more than a state of mind. I've had attempts from buxomly young ladies who want to be my friend and who have friends from Nigeria. "Age is just a number" is what one said. She's right, and the number is 78.
  13. Yeah, but I can't tighten it enough with my lefty. Getting old ain't for sissies.
  14. Hadn't thought of a Regal, but it seems more like my right hand and so squeezing with my left hand may be unaffected. I can tie on a Renzetti Traveler so long as I take my time on it, which isn't a bad thing with two good arms.
  15. I can't twist it enough to get a firm grip on medium size flies. I may have to sell it. A great vise.
  16. Thanks. I don't know what I was thinking. Of course the body is predominant. I probably shouldn't post when I've had a few adult beverages.
  17. This is an elementary question that's probably been answered dozens of times but still, I wonder..........why am I tying wings on dry flies that are about the length of the hook shank when wings on live Mayflies are two or three times longer than the body? I do it because, well, that's the way it's done and has been done for decades, but other than that unsatisfactory rote reason I don't know why. Is it an instance of balance on the water? Difficulty in casting and delivery? Or what?
  18. My favorite rod is an 8' St. Croix Legend (not the Legend Ultra). I got it from Cabela's as a close-out when the Ultra replaced the Legend. It's about the speed I like and I've caught a lot of fish with it. About 20 years ago. It either dark brown or black with maroon wraps.
  19. I tried tying a fly back a few years ago with silk, but I have been ruined by 8 0 and 14 0 threads. And realistically, I don't tie spiders and don't trust them. So I'll probably sell the lot.
  20. I checked out my stash...it's not all Gossamer. A lot of just floss. Sorry about that. I'll hold on to the silk in case I get to tie some spiders. Recount, about 18 rolls. One was stored with a bunch of floss, and the label came off, so I'm not counting that one. Wow...$40 a spool, hunh?
  21. I've got about 20 spools of this stuff. I got it about 10 years ago, in many different colors. I haven't used it much. Any suggestions on what do use it for?
  22. Saw a small moth in my fly tying room. I killed the little bastard, but that fact indicated he could be an offspring. Didn't see mama, and hope she isn't there. I loaded up with moth balls and while my feathers smell like an old lady's trunk, at least the feathers are hopefully safe.
  23. I've got hackle guards somewhere in the hurricane scene of my tying room. I thought about using them but I'm too lazy to look for them. The tin thing I use works OK so far. It's comforting to know I'm not the only one who cauterizes messy heads.
  24. If anyone is interested, there's a No 1 Universal vise on eBay, starting at $49. It doesn't have the bobbin cradle, but looks pretty good. A fairly new listing; no bids so far.
