  1. cracking, would love to hear any tips you have for that ammonite
  2. post a pic please. I just tied these last month for the first time too and would love to see someone else's. haven't fished em yet though so can't help ya with fouling or not…
  3. I use these uni trays. The price is ridiculous but I don't think I could live without them. If u could find a block of this type of foam u could burn spool sized holes into it and shape it to fit inside a drawer or something.
  4. Wrap your body into the thorax area, wrap a layer of thread back over that portion of the body to give u a nice wide base for your slip to sit on...no more splits. Stole that from Cravins book btw.
  5. What are you tying on now? I've got a Dyna King professional and am not happy with the jaws.
  6. Make sure you save those early attempts of yours kid. Those things are gold, 50 years from now you'll cherish those hand tied gems. Thats probably too far out for a fourteen year old to be looking but seriously hold on to a few of those, you'll be glad you did. As for help I cant say enough good things about "Charlie Cravens Basic Fly Tying". Ask your parents to pick it up for you. good luck
  7. Backpack/fly fish the wind river range for 2 weeks in Aug. with my boys. Prepare for that trip with more equipment purchases and a few backpacking/fly fishing trips around the Daks and Catskills in spring and early summer. dig up flytyers old posts and study them all.
  8. thnx My favorite blue gill pattern is Higa's SOS....it's my favorite patter for lots of things actually but it performs particularly well on blue gills. Whenever Im out on a pond or lake and I come across a kid or father/son that looks new to the sport and not catching with their bobbers and worms I'll set them up with an SOS. I tell them if they dont catch a fish on the very first cast I'll eat the fly myself......haven't had to eat one yet and the looks on their doubting faces when the sunnies swarm that thing as soon as it touches the water is priceless.
  9. Its supposed to be an emerging midge. Hackle on top of the film w/the midge suspended below. Its called the dandelion emerger or dandelion fly.....no seeds:) http://hipwader.com/2003/dandelion-fly-pattern
  10. With less than one year under my belt I'm curious as to what, if anything, you veterans out there would do differently if you were starting from scratch today.
  11. Nice catch! My number one go to pattern is Higa's SOS
  12. After seeing flytyers tutorial I don't think ill be dubbing those body's anymore. That slender floss body looks great.
  13. Bruce, nice superfly ties. I got to meet Pat Cohen at the International Fly Tying Symposium Last weekend, took a pic with my boys. Great guy! Im gonna take a shot at those divers soon. http://
  14. Maaaaan, each fly you post is as clean and as tight as it can be done. ....and the photo quality, sheesh. Keep em coming and thanks for sharing them...
  15. Ive only been tying for 10 mo. and I've only fished my own this year..... for the life of me I can not remember what I caught on first. Ive been thinking about it since this thread first popped up and Its driving me nuts. I do however remember my first fish on my own dry vividly! I can see that fishes head coming out of the water over and over repeatedly missing that x caddis again and again before he finally ate it. That image is forever burned into my memory.
  16. elk hair caddis or cdc n elk should definitely be in there. Just something about that elk/deer wing and that iconic head......
  17. Davies tops for sure, with tightlines a close second and Hans right there with em. I REALLY love the ozarks guys though. When these guys tie they have a good damn time doin it, I love that. His Trophy wife vid looked like a blast and I don't know if any man watching that didn't come away feelin a little jealous. Not just because his wife is hot but she can tie AND have fun doin it...........lucky ba?t$&d.
  18. Those look awesome. I want to try that crawfish...
