  1. Laser dub is like a wool with flash blended in. Nothing like ice dub. It does make nice minnow heads though.
  2. The slf I have is similar to a down sized ice dub. I only have a few colors of each, but I'd say it's a decent sub.
  3. CDC&elk! Super easy, 2 materials, works great.
  4. I tie a super sparse variation of the ice man minnow on small 10-14 octopus hooks. Real easy quick tie. You just high tie 3 small clumps of dubbing tied in their center and folded back. Laser dub belly, ice dub lateral line, Laser Dub back. Color combos are endless, eyes are optional.
  5. With laser dub, less is more. It holds its shape very well in the water, even tied very sparse.
  6. it might work, but the whole point of Skagit casting is that you can do it with no back cast room. If you're out in the water I feel like you have all the back casting room you'd need. Also, the board it self might get in the way of your cast(not sure), as you have a lot of line on the water during these types of casts.
  7. Thanks. Bookmarked. Good prices there. Have you ordered from them before?
  8. I don't fish redfish or tie worm flies. But, if I tied that, I would build up the under body ahead of where the estaz and zonker are tied in with lead wire or maybe more estaz. I'd also figure 8 the estaz around the eyes. But that narrow at the front body shape may have been what you're after. Short and sweet otherwise (sounds was off).
  9. If you're just tying to catch fish and just learning how to tie soft hackles, I would just use what thread you have in the color you like. I mostly use Danville flat waxed nylon.
  10. Won't get hijacked, if it's in the correct place. http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showforum=88
  11. Additionally, clear nail polish is a great alternative to head cement. Sally Hansen hard as nails has become the sort of standard for allot of tiers. Much cheaper, works great.
  12. harsh. None of your so called "logic" is required. Just something from the pfbc site or handbook. On the ethics part of it, you're certainly entitled to that opinion. So long as I'm catching fish with hooks inside their mouths, doesn't bother me in the slightest.
  13. I'll just leave this here. http://www.hatchmag.com/articles/5-reasons-beads-are-better-egg-fly-patterns/771963
  14. Sorry, but if you're doing this in PA, you're fishing illegally. http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/hunting-fishing/2009/12/20/Buyer-beware-of-illegal-outdoors-gear/stories/200912200155 Relevant portion of the article: I read that as one man's opinion. Did you see what I said in my post? "I've been pegging the bead about an inch up from the hook. EVERY SINGLE FISH I HAVE CAUGHT HAS BEEN HOOKED INSIDE THE MOUTH. " If I caught fish outside the mouth, I'd use them for articulation beads, or pitch them in the trash. Edit: show me where they're said to be illegal in the summary book or the pfbc Website, and I'll buy your argument. Fishing in pa, you know as well as I do, the one thing that's consistent when dealing with WCOs is their inconsistency.
  15. I use an arbor knot to tie the backing to the spool. An improved Albright knot to tie the backing to the fly line (unless there is a welded loop on the rear).
  16. I bought some beads a few years ago to see what the hype was about. Hadn't really read anything on how to actually rig them before then. I live in pa. The way they were originally intended to be fished, would be illegal, as the fish would be hooked outside the mouth. I've been pegging the bead about an inch up from the hook. EVERY SINGLE FISH I HAVE CAUGHT HAS BEEN HOOKED INSIDE THE MOUTH. Sorry for the caps, just wanted to make that very clear. If i found that they consistently hooked fish outside the mouth, I'd be out a few bucks. Oh well. The way I look at it. If the hook is very close to the bead, it's really no different than any other egg pattern.
  17. I've looked at thag advice before, but they don't say prices in their site. How much is that thing do you know? Really like the look of it. http://www.jvise.com/pages/ordering.html# click on the "pdf file" hyperlink near the top of the page for pricing.
  18. wow. That's sure tempting. I kinda wanted to stick with Amazon for the rod, due to fast easy free returns and shipping if I don't like it(prime member). But I'll consider that for sure.
  19. Do you own one? Which model? I can't be sure I won't throw my fly in front of a carp if I see one in casting distance.
  20. Certainly a good reputation on that one. Call me vain if you'd like, but, I think I'd take the redington on looks alone at that price.
  21. same rod!? Which model? Care to give a quick review? What line do you like with it?
  22. I forgot all about anglers roost! Thanks for that. Anyone have any experience with their cheaper #200m (or 201m,202m etc.)? I like that price a bit more. Do their reels ever go on sale?
  23. that's a real beauty, though right at the top of my budget.
  24. I'm considering getting an affordable 2wt for trout/panfish. Having trouble locating a reasonable priced reel that small. I may end up with a 3wt line on it, but would rather not buy a 3/4wt size reel. So, basically, looking for a cheap 2 or 2/3 wt reel. Any suggestions? Click/pawl or disc drag, doesn't matter. Is also prefer new over used. Country of origin is no object. Here's a link to the rod I'm considering, in case you're wondering. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01H70O632/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1473714593&sr=8-3&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=maxcatch%2Bfly%2Brod&dpPl=1&dpID=51-rHmMwa1L&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1
