  1. Only reason I ever wear goggles fishing is to cut glare on the water and under a canopy there's not much glare, so any kind of eye cover is a vision hindrance; having said that, the polarization that cuts glare can allow me to see the bottom better in some conditions and not in others, in the conditions where it helps, the gray just darkens every thing to the point that the contrast is lost while the amber/brown (my optician said they are the same?) seems to enhance the contrast. Most of the time my Rx shades/blinders stay in the car. I know nothing about fashion tho so.. YMMV.
  2. Way back when, I'd venture to say the hook chosen was the kind you had on hand or that was stocked locally, even in the '70s my primary source of tying hooks and materials or tools was the Bait Shop, he had Universal Vice stuff and a Raymond Rumpf catalog. In the larger sizes, salmon fly hooks and low water hooks were the only "fly designated" hooks he carried in stock. I can imagine this being more of a factor in the prewar years or through the '50s-'60s. By the late '70s other sources were (maybe before that and I was just unaware of them) abundant by mail and around 1980 (I think) a couple of pro shops opened within driving distance.
  3. Slashing take usually indicates a moving target to me, mayflies taking flight or caddis skittering across the water sort of thing. I think that I'd try a sparse bucktail 1.5-2" long on the idea of those minnows or something like a Stimulator and 4-5" slow strips with a pause now and then. The caddis like bugs I've seen at dusk are always big as grasshoppers and a hopper skittered might be good. Most of my late evening fishing is geared toward smb, so small streamers on top are a staple. Those kind of pools for trout also put me wanting double length leaders for low light angles, getting the line shadow or reflection farther away from the fish.
  4. I do a good deal of trout fishing sitting on a stool and roll casting, try a five gallon bucket if ya don't got a stool.
  5. You don't think the mirror reflection will spook the fish? I have always preferred a light-medium amber/brown for the added/enhanced contrast.
  6. I have observed some minnows that feed heavily on top just at/after dark and remain hidden at other times, but I think there are insects that hatch in such circumstances, caddis maybe or it could be spinners falling? A suggestion, light a gas lantern and watch what comes to it. maybe drape it with a light colored/transparent 'tent' to make the visitors more visible.
  7. Isn't that rayon acetate? made from wood and used to line coats? I did find out that although both viscose rayon and acetate rayon used to be considered one thing they now have to labeled specifically. Sorry about my confusion.
  8. I bought some rayon floss just recently, embroidery stuff that I untwist. I'm not really sure I know the difference in various degrees of rayon, what I have may be "viscose". What else is used for floss bodies other than thread? (I know silk floss exists, but I've never seen it)
  9. I had fast sink, slow sink, sink tip, DTF & WFF all in one weight once and used them all occasionally, all on the same reel & rod with spare spools, aside from the fact that at the time a spool was 1/3 the cost of a complete reel, when you walk and wade two spare spools in the vest weigh about what one reel does. I also had other weight lines on other spare spools that the reel frame could fit on other rods, I think I have 7-8 spares for that reel and only use it occasionally any more but every spool has different weight lines on them for test cast purposes when I acquire a new to me rod. I don't have great faith in the numbers marked on the rod label and try at least four line sizes to see what the rod likes best with my style. Are the spares worth it? The answer depends on who you are and how you fish, I no longer use WF or full sinking lines, I also live 1500 miles from where I did then and the waters are all different. If I had multiple rods rigged up in the way that some do, at least one would be lost or stepped on by day's end.
  10. The vise in the fore ground of some pictures looks like a Norvise and the post to the left is thread rest, vice in the last pic I don't recognize. I was wondering the same about the vise.

    Crap day

ya know, with the capital I just assumed it was a surname like the town in Idaho. Used to have neighbors with that name.
  12. Looks like good advice right there. I'm not out to impress and if a reel cost more than 20$ I'll look on ebay.to find a Pflueger.

So, just tied- not yet fished? I have no doubt that they will take fish. Streams are full of wiggly stuff that fish eat. .

Predators to keep them check would explain why they haven't had the population explosion there that they have in other places. Pythons never entered my mind, but they very well could be what LA and TX need. I believe some areas of WA and OR as well. Silver linings for clouds. Invasive eats invasive.

They've had nutria there since the mid '50s but for whatever reason they aren't overrunning the state and devastating areas like they do in LA. They aren't in demand for fur and the only money in trapping them would be in damage control contracts. Any fur taken that far south is going to only be used in crafts because the underfur won't get dense without cold. In south Mo. the fur is roughly 1/3-1/2 the value of fur from Iowa or Mn,or Wi. A bobcat from here might bring $100 and one from NV bring $800 in the same sale, with one from SD bringing $300. And in the next auction they might all be at 10% of those numbers but the spread will stay about the same. MT has had the highest priced coyotes for a long time. Currently all fur is in the toilet, most of the market is in China and Russia and they seem to have money problems or tariff problems. 1986 was the last good fur year and not long after that most of the NY buyers were gone, don't recall at the moment what crisis caused the drop, but it bankrupted many. When dealing in commodities it's the global picture that counts.

I might, if I was there or had to be there; but there are things to like about other places too. I am aware of the trapping situation kinda.

The squirmy worm will get a ticket in Mo fly only waters, we have a separate class of lures called "soft plastic baits, scented or unscented" that are prohibited some places. I think that makes it easier for enforcement, must be difficult to distinguish the scented ones. They'd be legal in all water not designated fly only. those tiny ones look like they'd take suckers?
  19. Tier, will you be using this from boat? What kind of water? 3' deep or 60' deep? The halibut story I read used 8' 14 wt graphite rod but said there was no casting from the boat. In the heavy weights (over 8wt) I'd agree the carbon gets an advantage in handled weight and at those sizes I might choose differently, this would also apply to over 9' in length. For me that is kind of a change over area. But it's also an area where I'd consider casting gear. I don't recall ever handling a 7' or 7.5' 6wt graphite fly rod.
  20. The several graphite rods I've owned were strong casters but fragile, I went back to fiberglass for most of my fishing, I may be too rough for graphite but I've had about five that broke while fishing, one was broken and repaired three times. The experts say this is generally the result of previous impacts that cause unseen internal damage, all I know is they broke under load while casting or fishing. How does a rod not get bumped now and then? I like shorter rods than are common in graphite and generally slower action than most modern graphite. Long and stiff rods tire me much quicker and hurt my shoulder more. But. I may be the only one who feels that way. For my money the all around rod is 7'-8' and 6,7,or 8 weight. It will bend into the grip under a full load and have a fast mid and a tip soft enough to protect 1# tippet when trout fishing. My rods also will cast moderately well with lines lighter and heavier than the suggested weights. Now, here's the rub, because every ones casting ability varies and everyone is taller or shorter with longer or shorter arms no two people will cast exactly the same with any given rod. You will have to hold it in your hands and make some cast with the flies you normally fish with and at least three differing lines before you know if it is a dream rod with built in magic or just a tool, or worst case something you hate. No one knows what works you but you. If I had the casting ability to use all my flies on a 2wt I probably would like a 2wt better, but the 6/7wts get me by and cover up my lack of form. PS I know nothing about any of the fish you listed, they don't grow them down here.

Won't find marten in FL. Nor lynx, nor wolverine. They have opossum I believe.

Florida trapping is pretty limited and fur values minimal, I don't think I ever heard of anyone going there to hunt. Although they do have feral hogs to kill. No skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing or trout fishing, mostly flat with little scenery according to my son who has been there ~20 years, I should go down there sometime just to see if it's as bad as he claims. My version of that picture would be flooding over the last two weeks. This year has been a three season year unless you count that two weeks in July when it was summer like, spring ran into late June and fall started in late July, imo. Where ever you you will still be you and boredom is internal. Or so I've been told.

    Custom ARs

I used to have a pickup that was Custom, had that marked right on it in "chrome", all that meant was a trim package installed at the factory. The word means nothing or whatever the user wants it to, kinda like saying "wow" or "huh".
