Crackaig 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2013 Next month (9th & 10th) is the Irish Fly Fair in Galway. I'm tying on the Virtual Nymph stand so I've been tying these in preparation. Nymph Skin Dragonfly Nymph Crayfish (Feather claws) Crayfish (hair claws) And, of course, one or two hundred of these... ...The Ammonite Nymph. Cheers, C. Crackaig 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2013 To tell the truth Colin, I'm getting sick of the sight of them. That pile of Ammonites is less than 1/4 what I've done over the past week, and I'm only half way through what I need to do. Cheers, C.
sunsignarcher 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2013 I cant even wrap my head around pumping out that many flies?!? I spent HOURS getting through that first sex dungeon and I aint much faster on anything else. 100 flies would take me a freagin month to tie......if I managed not to shoot myself first. Crackaig 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2013 One thing about tying the same fly a few times is you really get to know it. Some of the silly things that people do when they develop a pattern get ironed out. If you look at Steve's original tying instruction you may not see anything to change, Some years ago I watched Steve demo this fly at the NW Fly Dresser's Guild meeting. After his demo I said to him, "If you put the lead strips on in reverse order to how you do it it will smooth itself out, then you don't need to waste all that time with thread and floss smoothing it out." Had I not tied several hundred of them this wouldn't have occurred to me either. Production tying does make you streamline the tying process. The real secret is don't worry about the speed, just don't stop! Sunsignarcher I no longer have a firearm or I would certainly have done so. Cheers, C. Crackaig 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2013 Those are for trout. They are on TMC 200r hooks. size 8 & 10 so not huge. On the R. Wharfe I've found crayfish up to 6" but the trout don't take them at that size! Cheers, C.
