teamtrout 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2014 I just bought like 200 yards of mylar tubing from a local fly shop's clearance section for $3, but I have no idea how to use it. I want to use it for the bodies or some marabou streamers, but whenever I cut it the ends get all "frayed" and I don't know how to handle it. Whats the best technique to tie it in? tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2014 First, you need to size the tubing to the application. If you're simply going to cover the hook shank with a length of it, you'll want the smaller size tubing. Or, you'll have to build up a thread base first if the tubing is larger. This might help. http://theriverscourse.blogspot.com/2012/01/tying-thoroughly-modern-magog-smelt.html If you're tying a Zonker style streamer, check this out: http://www.orvis.com/news/fly-fishing/video-how-to-tie-a-pearl-zonker-streamer/ Or this one: http://thefeatherbender.com/2013/02/28/the-virtual-minnow-a-zonker-with-a-twist/ You can use the same technique for the body on a marabou streamer, but eliminate the frayed tail & wrap it neatly with thread. Coat that butt with tying cement & after dry, proceed with tying the rest of the fly. As far as the frayed end, any of these video's should solve your problem. There is another way to tie a Zonker using flat lead tape inside the tubing, but I think most folks now tie them as above.

JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted October 31, 2014 paint a band of clear hard-as-nails on the tubing where you want to cut it, let it dry for a few minutes, and you can cut it with no fraying.
Al Beatty 0 Report post Posted November 17, 2014 Hi, All of the suggestions are good, valuable tips. Add this one to the mix if you wish. We spray our tubing with Tuff Film (from art supply store) or with Krylon clear semi gloss from Ace Hardware, Lowe's or Home Depot. They both do a good job of holding the woven braid together while tying. Take care & ...
