See what I mean? Bad influence.

Yup, I have been tying for 5-6 years and when a fly comes out looking good I think I am finally getting the hang of it. Then I come to a site like this and see what others are tying and realize I still have a long way to go...or that I need to be more ambitious in what I tie!

Thanks Mark, nice bunch of pheasant tail nymphs had a good laugh with your remarks with Kimo. I could use a lesson on photography (magic or otherwise) it is where I always struggle.

The parachute is a size 20, it was killer on the local tailwater on Saturday. I just like tying missing links, size 16, and since there were caddis in the air, no risers, last Sunday on the freestone, I figured what the heck.

That's a pretty good picture of the Grey Ghost. I think the only way to make it much better would be to shoot it through a ring light. That's made all the difference for me. Unless you want to go all out with a full photo set up like Kimo and them do. It can get quite technical if you're not careful. Those guys make it look easy but it's kind of over my head.

Hey Mark,
I've also gone with a Ring light. It makes things a lot easier.
I've also added a bit of "light painting" with the ring light for a cool effect as seen below.

You can see the reflection of the ring light in the bead chain.

As to the quality of your ties, I'm pretty sure you are like the rest of us.
We are  our own worst critics.

Kimo

So your comment of your own tying is interesting. We all judge ourselves when tying, and we all learn with each fly, (except those 1500 dozen fly's  a year guys). It might make for better pic's that you install a light back drop. The fly above will fish fine.

"Light painting" , "focus stacking" - all over my head and just more bad influence😁.

Yes, I love the light ring, it's fast and easy.

Yes, I am my own worst critic but it's the tiers here that showed me what a good fly looks like. Until I came here, I was pretty happy in my own ignorance. I could tie my own flies, catch a lot of fish with them and be happy. Not anymore now I have to measure stuff, make small heads, taper bodies nicely, space ribbing evenly and sort feathers so they are exactly the same length. I catch myself counting fibers of a feather. So, thanks a lot for that.😋

It's the examples that you guys set that make me want to be a better tier and a better photographer.
