He is! What the heck is a 2X2?

2X2 = 2 materials or less added to a hook and thread and 2 minutes or less to tie the pattern.

I like the 2 materials but, since I time my tying with a calendar, I don't pay much attention to the second part!  I like working with newer tyers and 2X2's are a nice option to learn on.

I wonder why whoever tied the reference pattern omitted the second band of peacock mentioned in the recipe

peacock herl, yellow floss, Leacock herl

it says it’s tied like a royal coachman dry which would have peacock herl, red floss, peacock herl body

I noticed that also-  Maybe they just wanted to differentiate it just a little bit more from the Coachman line?

Thank you for the explanation. Simplicity is the hallmark of a great fly, to me.

Yeah, it's one of the things I have in common with these flies!😁

Here are a couple 2X2 patterns that were developed by looking at things differently.

Parachute Midge Cluster - Jim Cramer designed this fly by turning a Bivisible on its side, sort of!

1853321603_ParachuteMidgeCluster.thumb.jpg.91c0eaf62dcee324d8b11c3a3d9e276d.jpg

Hook - standard dry fly, 14-16

Thread - black, place thread base ~ 2 hook eye widths on either side of shank mid-point

Post - clump of black Antron yarn/dubbing, flatten post after hackle is wrapped (I have used black peacock as well, and either can be Ice dub as well)

Hackle - grizzly dry fly hackle, tied parachute style

Reversed Spider - Mike Kinney designed this cross between a spider and Tenkara style fly

Hook - 3 XL curved hopper or Mustad 9672, 6-8

Thread - black or to match

Tail and Front Facing Hackle - Lady Amherst or Golden Pheasant tippet (dyed or natural color) or Mallard Flank (again either dyed or natural color)

Body - medium chenille, any color, start wraps at mid shank and wrap to eye then to the tail, tie off at the tail

NOTE: The front hackle doesn't show this as well as I'd like but should be a front facing cone shape.  I'm sending my flies out for the photos and this one is a little crunched from its travels!

Had to move my tying stuff to the basement for the evening.  First 2 things I pulled out of the bag I shoved everything in were a dyed hackle and chartreuse yarn; I took this as a sign.

hook - WFC Model 3 #10
thread - Uni 8/0 chartreuse
tail - yarn chartreuse
rib - small wire silver
underbody - tying thread
body - medium tinsel pearl
body hackle - dyed chartreuse (1 Tbs Rit Neon Yellow/1 cup water)
thorax - Ice Dub peacock black
shoulder - pheasant rump dyed chartreuse
collar/head - pronghorn dyed black (1 Tbs Rit Dark Brown/1 cup water overdyed with 1 Tbs Rit Black/1 cup water)

Scott

I really like the body.  Actually, I love the entire fly.  I may steal this one.
