WWKimba 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2022 A couple poly(propylene) 2X2 patterns today. Both are fly box stuffers! Black Magic - This is a pattern developed by a river guide from Coldwater, Michigan named Terry Klavinski around 1985. It should end up ~ 5/8" to 3/4" long when finished and can be fished dry as is or fished wet with an underbody of lead/non-lead wire wraps. It is a nice pattern for trout, crappie, bluegill, and bass. Fish it with a slow upstream strip tease style retrieve. Hook - Mustad 94840, 14 Thread - black Tail - black squirrel Body - black poly dubbing Rackelhanen - This is one of my favorite caddis dry patterns to both tie and fish. It was developed by Swedish fly tyer Kenneth Boström in 1967. It can be tied in many single colors and 2- and 3-color combinations such as any natural color body/thorax with a grey , cream or white wing; a green thorax, grey wing and brown head (green apple caddis).A grey/olive combination can also be a decent olive dun mayfly imitation. Hook - Mustad 94833, 10-18 Thread - to match head color Shuck - a couple strands of poly, same color as abdomen Abdomen - poly dubbing, cut poly yarn into 1 cm long pieces and mix Wings - poly yarn, tied on far side of hook, folded over and tied towards tyer then cut even with to 1 hook gap behind curve of hook Thorax/Head - poly dubbing, tied over wing base and thicker than abdomen. I know, I know and I hate saying that because with what must be hundreds of thousands of fly tyers in the world it would not surprise me if someone starts screaming that their uncle Frank used to tie the exact same thing and he even got it published it in a book back in 1992! Then the next thing you know uncle Frank is at your house banging on your door with a gun. Anyway this pattern is created from common methods and techniques that we all know and love. And with all apologies to uncle Frank I can say that I arrived at it on my own. This fly has been productive for me anytime terrestrials are working, locally that can be June through October here in the Northeast. I fish it exactly as an emerger at the surface. No floatant, dead drift in the surface film. A subtle twitch of the rod can make the legs kick. THE TINY MONSTER HOOK: #14 1XS 2XL NYMPH THREAD: BLACK 6/0 EYE: 25LB TRILENE MONO- GREEN MELTED UNDER BODY: LIFE CYCLE CADDIS DUBBING: BLACK ABDOMEN: BLACK HEN, PALMERED AND CLIPPED RIB: ULRA WIRE- CHARTREUSE THORAX: LIFE CYCLE CADDIS DUBBING: BLACK LEGS: (6) PHEASANT TAIL FIBERS: NATURAL, KNOTTED HEAD: LIFE CYCLE CADDIS DUBBING: BLACK Fantastic!
