Scented Flies

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if applying some scent to a fly, especially a wet fly, would help? I'm thinking about how this would potentially attract a carp or other species that have a keen sense of smell.

If any of you do use scent, please let me know which ones.

Thanks!

Dave

I do not use scent. But attracting carp is something I do! Scent is not necessary but I'm sure that it will make fishing easier. If you want to try anise oil I hear it works great!

While I don't think you would have any problems in most waters, senting flies may be illegal in some "fly only" waters. Be sure and check the regulations for the water your fishing before using scent.

Scenting your flies :o

 this could turn in to a real can of worms, but absolutely it does work if you choose to do so. I have used Anise soaked flies for carp and it works like a charm as does storing bass poppers in a bag of garlic powder. Make sure to check your local laws before fishing a flies only section as scenting usually turns a legal fly in to illegal bait.

Wow, that was quick... thanks guys

Hmm, I didn't consider the legality side of this. I live in Thailand, so even if there were laws there ain't anyone who is gonna enforce it. :P

i did consider the fact that some folks (me included) might think it's cheating a bit. If I can figure out how to catch fish without scenting, that would be more rewarding.

----

I could just imagine what goes on underwater:

Mrs. Carp, "where you been?!"

Mr. Carp, "I got caught, dear!"

Mrs. Carp, "I don't believe you, but hey... wait a minute, is that Anise I smell? Let me see your lips."

Mrs Carp still, "OK, I'll let you off the hook this time."

Mr Carp :yahoo:

I know that at a fly shop in erie they sell a bottle of scented liquid people put it on flies or lures to catch steelhead. I have no clue if it works I never tried it nor do I plan to. I have also heard of people spraying wd-40 to attract fish.

If you were not talking about carp, but some fish that goes after bait fish I some times use some shad oil on my jigs and could see where it may be good on a Clouser or a similar bait. Maybe even streamers and the like.

If you want to know where to get shad and or some other oils like Menhaden, Crawfish just ask. I would be happy to share my place to get that because it's not every place that you can get 100% shad oil. They also have salt water products like shrimp and squid oil.

Wait a sec...

"Phuket" is a real place?

Does "Phuk Yu" live there?

As for scents they do help - a guy once rubbed an eel's smile on a fly and it started to produce far more fish than had been caught at the same spot before.

It's pronounced "poo" "ket". Everywhere you see a 'ph' when Thai is converted to English it is a 'p' sound and not an 'f'.

I've not met Phuk Yu, but I know a girl named Porn.

Hey Skip,

Thanks for that... Thanks for offering to tell where to get the stuff, but I'm in Thailand and I'm sure it's not available here. However, I usually go back to Virginia to visit my family every summer. I saw a lot of scents at the Bass Pro Shop, but didn't get any. I reckon I could get my brother to send me over some.

Or, what I could do, and what I was thinking, is make my own scent. The Thais already have quite a few food items that stink like crazy and I might just try them to see.

Funny, they think that eating cheese is nasty, yet they gobble down a rotten fish head in a second. ;)

Where do yo fish in Phuket?

I was there for 2 weeks for my honeymoon. We went on a charter one day fishing for small Tuna. It was pretty much the worst fishing trip I ever had. The boat went about 4 knots and took 3 hours to get to the fishing spot. We fished for an hour and 3 hours back. I got 1 tuna though.

It also took me a number of days to realize that no one should ever ride a tuk-tuk.

Other than that, it was a great trip.

Hey Ribs,

I fish mostly freshwater at Khao Sok National Park. That's about 2 1/2 hours north of Phuket. My favorite fish is the Giant Snakehead. The reservoir is 165 square kilometers in size and it's stunningly beautiful, so even if I don't catch any fish, I am happy. Of course, I'm more happy when I catch some.

I'm not surprised about your fishing trip here. I'm sure they went super slow to save money on fuel, totally disregarding the fact that it wasn't fair to you. Yep, tuk tuks truly suck... I never use 'em.

BPS is OK and all, but you may want to check this place out for your family to get you some really great stuff.

I have nothing to do with them other than buy their products.
