  1. Rest easier. I had a 100lb tarpon on for about 20 minutes when it broke my 20lb class. This happened after he tightened the drag on my 12wt. Black Death toad. I really wanted a treppa fly. I did manage to scrounge out 2 permit later with one being 25lb+ (not on the fly). Peace out it is beer thirty!!!!
  2. Fished tarpon today. First one came unbuttoned after being stuck. Two more ate and I set the damn hook too fast. I go again wednesday
  3. good choices. I see you assume there is trout. Now that the ice has been broken Ill give it a go. Flies: 5wt black gnat, black bugger, and a grasshopper 9 wt large stealth bomber, ep baitfish, white bugger I think these flies would appeal to a multitude of species a survival manual that shows edible plants-- would be helpful to know what not to eat a 220 conibear trap-- trap food Giada (she is a chef on tv)-- help cook something tasty and I dont think I would get tired of looking at her
  4. I am at the start of a week long vacation so I thought a flyfishing survivor hypothetical scenario might be fun. The scenario follows. You are being dropped in an unknown location that has a variety of flora and fauna. Fish and wildlife are very abundant and yes there are dangerous species of each. You will remain here for one year at which time you will be rescued. You are provided with the following items: dutch oven and skillet magnesium fire starter a good quantity of rope and parachute cord axe, survival knife, and shovel backpack and tent 5 gallon water vessel boots and appropriate clothing a 5wt and 9wt rod with appropriate leaders, line, reels etc You get to bring the following: 3 different flies for each rod and in sufficient quantity to last a year a book of your choosing 1 miscellaneous item (cannot be a gun, electronic, boat or canoe, or use a propellant) someone of the opposite sex (cannot be related and this is not meant to be dirty or to get you in trouble with your spouse) You have been told that the climate is comfortable. What would you bring from the permissible items and why? Who would you bring and why? Have fun!
  5. Awesome. I love Maple syrup. Do you boil the sap on a wood fire? I always thought hanging a ham and finish curing it in the rafters while someone was making maple syrup would be a mighty fine way to finish off a ham. Maple syrup also takes me back to my childhood. My grandmother would make waffles on an ancient waffle maker, she would criscross two slabs of crisp bacon inside the waffle batter, and then give them a good douse of real maple syrup (fresh picked pecans for those who wanted them on top). This made for a great breakfast. My cousins and I then would head off to the creek to lay seige to the salmanders, crawdads, and whatever wonderful denizens of the shallows it was holding at the time. Fun times!
  6. I like the idea of the hopper wings. How do the biots compare to goose biots? Riff: I know it is sacrilege for some to keep a trout or any other fish but I do keep some (not all that many) but when I retire I would love (wife would hate) to try and live only off the fish and game that I harvest and the vegetables that I grow. I know I would need to supplement with staples such as bread, milk, flour (we have chickens and already have plenty of eggs). I have the belief that if we taught people how valuable fish and wildlife are to us for sport and the table (for everyone) that we could better protect the resource. I dont take anything that is rare or non renewable. I will be picking wild greens soon (crease, crows foot, poke, etc.) Btw my son and I have been enjoying mule deer jalapeno cheese brats from the mulie I got this fall and they are fantastic. Bring on the warmth!!!
  7. Thanks guys. Ill give all your suggestions a shot. The Cumberland River while being a good fishery is atypical in a lot of ways. I am sure one of your suggestions will work.
  8. Yeah! I heard one gobble behind the house a couple of weeks ago. It was during the only warm up we have had. Well with all the cold wet weather we are having the morels (dry land fish) should be a little later than usual here. Hopefully, Ill get to pick up a few while hunting. I hope you get a big bird. Ive been pretty fortunate the last several years. Id really like to tie some flies with them. The wild turkey is such an awesome bird. Surely there has to be more people that chase turkeys in spring on here. Riff and I cant be the only ones!
  9. Probably the same response as to riffs suggestion but my favorite salmon fly is the green highlander. I don't fish for salmon as we don't have them here in Kentucky but I sure would bid on them. Good luck with your auction!
  10. I love hunting turkeys and usually get a couple each season. I already have all the mounts and mounted fans that a person needs. I enjoy eating the turkey very much. I made a turkey gumbo last year that my buddies and I really enjoyed. I hate not using more of the bird since I am done with all the mounting. Ill still keep the beards and spurs cant help myself. What feathers do you guys like from turkeys (natural as Im not dying anything) and what do you tie with them? Thanks.
  11. Id like to join with a stealth bomber full pimp. It catches various species of fish including redfish.
  12. Sorry sc hate the heels. I am uk grad and after winning it last year fizzled out this year. I do tie some uk poppers. Go Cats!
  13. I do not like groundhog with groundhog gravy, my father made me eat it once growing up, but for this little lying bast..d, I would definitely make an exception or maybe the smoker it usually makes everything taste better.
  14. Cool video BTA. Im glad you put it up for us to see when my 7 year old son saw your mini hopper from the swap he decided it would look better in his fly box.
  15. Get some scopalomine patches to put behind your ear and you wont get seasick. I dont get seasick and still use them occassionally. I was fishing for dorado (mahi mahi), tuna, and marlin in 9-11 foot swells all day. As I said I dont get seasick but I put a patch on that day. My buddy who said he was a diver and didnt need any patches ended up in the head all day and was puny the following day. I have fished in similar swells and not gotten sick but listening to someone else makes me very afraid of getting the "green." Good luck! Btw dorado makes my favorite fish taco. Dorado+remoulade+pickled slaw in a fresh tortilla=Amazing!
  16. looks awesome! I cant wait to get it and use it. Anyone on here that is looking for a rod ought to seriously think about having steve work his magic. This is the second rod I have bought from him and the fourth custom rod. My son and I got out over the weekend and used the one steve made for him. The quality of rod is fantastic and the reasonableness of the price is even better.
  17. Piker thanks for sharing the pics. Gorgeous scenery and nice fish. By the way what is the black one? Do you eat any of the saltwater fish?
  18. AWESOME! The conch and shrimp are my favorites.
  19. I plan on constructing my leaders this year. I am a big fan of flourocarbon. I am particularly interested in streamer leaders for my 6 wt. I thought about going with 60-20-20 percentage construction using 20lb flouro 12 or 14lb and then have the tippet end in 8 or 6lb. Thoughts from anyone who does this? 5 wt is my general purpose trout rod so any recommendations are appreciated there. 3 wt any recommendations I usually use surgeons knots as I find them easy and comfortable. I know some people are not fans of flouro thinking that it is not as tough as mono. I think that is tougher, is more difficult to see and is more abrasion resistant. I think it breaks on some people at the knots. It is very susceptible to friction heat from cinching knots so you must moisten the knot well prior to cinching tight. Thanks in advance for your comments.
  20. Would love to seem some posts of your waters and the fish that inhabit them. A trip to Scotland, Ireland and Wales is on my to do list some day.
  21. Thanks for the tips guys. Will do. Thanks for the cite to the books pt. I do enjoy a good book.
  22. I plan on trout fishing more this year and fishing in general. I fish the Cumberland River tailwater in Kentucky as it is close to where I live. It has not been the fishery it always has been due to repairs on wolf creek dam on lake cumberland. The generation flows have been enormous. Anyway, the flows should have some normalcy this year as the dam repairs are almost complete and they Corps says they are going to raise the lake from 680 to 700 which is still below normal but better. I always throw streamers mainly white. I want to expand my arsenal. I have tried nymphing and according to most including the guides midges are the way to go. I havent tried them. I tie them for my friend who kills the trout on the clinch with a zebra midge with a herl collar that I tie for him but I just havent had the mindset to use them. I have used a copper john but I much prefer throwing streamers. It must be from a lifetime of bass fishing (tournaments, etc) which doesnt excite me like the old days. I thought a soft hackle may be a compromise. According to my research the first 4 miles below the dam the predominant bugs are midges. After getting a ways from the dam there are caddis and mayflies. The hatches are very unpredictable. (The only hatches I have experienced have been cream midges, hoppers, cicada, etc) The river also has giant stoneflies that are nocturnal. I thought I would try the partridge and olive. Thoughts, suggestions, different flies (sizes, etc,) I will be fishing from a boat.
  23. Kirk I really like the ccg stuff that I have (thick, thin, and hydro). One of the things I like the best is that application is easy do to the packing, it makes it easier for me to use. What kind of problems are you having with it. I have noticed that if the batteries are weak in my pro cure light that uses lithium (expensive) batteries that the stuff wont dry. Also, the thick and the thin need a coating of hydro to properly set up and not have a greasy feeling. What is the housing like on the other uv products if you know?
  24. Pj. You asked the age old question of men in general. Why trade the Chevy for the Ford, the orvis rod for the sage, the 40 year old blonde for to twenties.
  25. I tie foam flies with the craft store stuff. I tie Tokyo Spiders, hoppers, and stealth bombers with it. I have never used the "good" stuff. I dont have a fly shop anywhere near me so checking it out myself is not an option. Whats the difference?
