  10. Well I’m glad I’m not the only one getting old. I’m slowly working my way down to a size 2 hook. By and large I don’t tie much smaller than 16 anymore. But it seems they are making size 16 hooks smaller these days.
  11. Of course. With the hat magnifiers I was looking under the lens. Perhaps I should try the readers without the bifocals. At the very least they may make me look wise. With my hat magnifiers I had to be pretty close to the fly to be effective. With the big magnifier I can have my face much further away. I like the idea of using it to dig out splinters. I seem to get them a couple times a week. The little metal slivers are the worse and very difficult to see with the naked eye.
  12. I’m so accustomed to my bifocals that I feel blind in all directions without them. I’m good size 12 and bigger but the 14’s started giving me trouble and 16’s became next to impossible without some sort of help i can still tie saltwater size stuff and things like wooly buggers and other freshwater streamers without any assistance. Men like your father are a dying breed. Gone our the days of doing things yourself, almost. My kids are amazed that I had welding class in high school. looks like the magnavision. Kind of a fancy version of a hat magnifier but it might be worth a try if the lamp magnifier doesn’t work out. Don’t you find you’re constantly taking them on and off your head? Yes, this is what I referred to as a depth of field problem, perhaps not the right terminology. This is what I experienced at first, my hand was overshooting the hook. After a couple flies I adjusted and believe it will become second nature in a few more flies.
  13. I already wear bifocals so the readers wouldn’t work which is why I was using the hat magnifiers. I think the combo of my bifocals and looking through the magnifiers was giving me a headache. is it your youth? I can’t remember either. I tried the magnified lamp once before as well. I didn’t like then it because I had a depth of field problem but I think I’m already getting a handle on this. There is definitely a learning curve. So far it hasn’t been in my way but I can see where it could get in the way. I thought about the magnavision visor but just figured it would be the same as the hat magnifiers. If the magnified lamp takes a turn for the worse perhaps I’ll try the Magnavision next.
  14. thanks. Let’s hope the fish have your appetite.
  15. I don’t own a recliner but tying in a recliner just sounds like a bad plan. If you don’t have to sit in a recliner I would recommend exploring other options. I sit at a bench on a shop stool. I frequently have a TV on at the bench because I enjoy tying and watching/listening to baseball games. My style of fly tying does not require a high level of concentration, attention to detail or a distraction free zone where I cant have a T.V. on. It pays to be simple minded.
  16. I’ve put it off as long as I could. I have been tying with a hat magnifier for about a year now but it was not really convenient or practical for me. At times it even gave me a headache. So when I saw a table lamp magnifier light out at the curb I grabbed it. Now I’m not ordinarily a trash picker but It still had the plastic around the extensions and it was pristine. It took a few flies to get use to it but my early impression is it’s way better then the hat magnifiers.

  20. I love halibut. My wife went to the fish market this weekend to get some Halibut but she came home with cod. No fresh Halibut to be had in my parts. Good for you guys! Great trip!
  21. You and me both. It was a great outing because it exceeded our expectations, the fish were really healthy looking, we came home with a lot of hope and I’m excited to get back out there. A definite win. It’s been my home waters for about 35 years and it’s been a fantastic fishery for most of that time but it really requires a boat to fish successfully because of the limited bank access. Nothing is what it use to be though and I ever so briefly had a thought to sell my boat and go back to trout fishing. The thought of that had me breaking out in hives.

  23. We launched in lambertville right above the wing dam. You are correct there are condos there now. That was always a popular fishing spot for the shore bound angler. You can still walk out on the wing dam from the jersey side if the Lambertville gauge is under 2’.
  24. I haven’t had my boat out enough to run the winter gas out so I took the day off and went fishing. We’ve had about 3 weeks of 95 degree and high humidity days which of course brings violent storms and high muddy water. Today the heat and humidity subsided and it only reached the mid 80’s with a 5 MPH wind. With river levels dropping to 1.75’ (perfect level) it was time for a SMB trip with the boat and spinning gear. Now the river has been SMB fishing very poorly over the last 6 or more years so I was more hoping to run the winter gas out. We fished for about 5 hours and took a good long boat ride. We boated 24 and lost 6 others. Not a big number day but the average size was the best in a very long time. It was the kind of day that made me think there is hope for the future of the river. Ran the gas out to boot so a very productive day,
