  1. Ever tried hot melt glue and glue gun technique? Don't know if I have seen it in Canada. Bought mine out of a shop in Montana Years ago.
  2. The material is available from flyflex.com. They also have a video available. I don't have a SBS, but when I bought the material, I bought it in too large a size and its a pain to shape on smaller hooks. I believe the finished fly was available from Orvis, but don't know if they still stock it. The way I tied it was just from pictures on the web. Buddy is in Belieze now trying them out.
  3. I keep my hooks in labeled watchmaker containers, and have over a hundred of them. I agree exactly with Mike. The tape is not cheap either.
  4. I tie something very similar - except single hook, sometimes rubber curly tail, and for the head I will wrap fl orange, red or yellow cheneele around the barbell weight. Egg Sucking Leech
  5. I like it! The body of that bug looks like it may be tied in similar fashion to the classic chatterer
  6. One thing you should also check is if the blanks have been turned with a lathe to accept the ferrules. Gluing the ferrules on straight is tough enough, but turning the blanks to accept the ferrules can be intimidating, and you need a lathe and some good files, calipers, and lots of patience. If the blanks are pre ferruled you should be OK, and it will be pretty much like building a fiberglass or graphite rod. Rod jewlery can of course be upgraded. For finish you can hand rub oil as opposed to dipping in varnish. The action of most bamboo rods is slow.
  7. I like my tackle and heve fairly expensive rods and reels. I have a case from Orvis similar to shoebop. Can carry a 4 piece 4wt, 6wt and 8wt which pretty much covers me, and the associated reels and spools, tippet etc. Perfect in the boat or on the quad, as I rarely walk and wade very far these days
  8. Tails on nymphs, idaho nymph comes to mind. Ill use magpie too
  9. Dad bought me a modest fly tying kit for Christmas when I was 6. Took two sets of lessons form different people in the local fish and game and by the time I was 14 I was tying bucktail walleye jigs for a local tackle shop. At 2 cents a jig that didn't last long. I'm 58 now and I've been tying since, however in my university days I didn't seem to have much time except for school. And now, don't tie nearly as many flies as I used to, but love collecting materials just the same.
  10. Nicely said Bimini, I have a buddy that can easily cast into his backing no matter what weight of fly rod he uses. A pleasure to watch. I can't
  11. Im sure this massive cold front ( extreme cold ) that is moving across Canada is going to affect your weather in the States. Overnight we warmed 30 degrees C as it moved further east. Its just plain goofy this year. Hoping to get on the hard water Monday - I'll bring my auger extension

    No BBQ Today

Extreme Cold here today again in most of Alberta and all of Saskatchewan - -45C with wind chill. But temps expected to be above 0 by Sunday if you can believe, thats a 45C shift in 2 days. Think I'll BBQ Sunday afternoon!
  13. Sweet, A buddy of mine has both a yellow and blue macaw and african grey for over 20 years and I have been the reciepient of many shed feathers. I've never had the immagination to tie anything with them though.
  14. Exactly Kimo! When I upgraded I found that I had 5 Demitron Optilux 500 curing lights just lying around, 1 went into my lab, 1 into my tying room, and the other 3 I think I just plain lost somewhere. If your DDS/DMD upgraded they are probably just hanging around in his/her basement. Doug
  15. You may want to ask your dentist if he/she has an old white filling curing light? Could be expensive though, because they sure are new.
  16. I stand corrected, I found a clear flowable resin available, but at $90.29 / gram? Must be the flouride!
  17. Yup, and lots of it. Can't even remember seeing a low viscosity clear flowable product though in the dental industry. Funny, I first bought some 10 years plus ago. Said exactly the same thing - clear dental resin. When I did some research seems it was developed and marketed by a dentist and his lawyer.
  18. My technique is very similar to hatchet jack, slowly mixing on tinfoil. I don't normally add heat, but if I do I have used a hair blow dryer on the lowest setting. I like his straw approach, I think you will have more control over the material
  19. Thats not cold! Getting down to -40C or -40F if you like, tis the same, the next couple of nights out here.
  20. I wear prescription glasses - and that prescription seems to change every 2 years. Got tired of spending $700.00 on sunglasses every 2 years also so now I just wear green polarized fitovers. Look goofy, but cheap, and work really well for my eyes.
  21. And Cream, When I look at my Carie Stevens Rangeley Favorite Trout and Salmon Flies poster they look properly proportioned! Great Job!
  22. They work great! Been using that same model for salmon for years and years. I didn't get such a good deal though
  23. No Kidding - From early October, 2016 - Morning shoot
  24. Adam, How do you find those Magic Heads work? My experience has been that they have actually inverted over the head of the fly in fast water or when ripping the fly while trolling. I havn't tied with them in over a couple of years now but think I will give them another good effort next season. Doug
  25. With temps hovering in the -15C and 40 km winds (wind chill -30C plus) I am expecting a great freeze! Our highs for the next couple of days are not to be above the -30C mark let alone the wind. All the snowbirds all but left - Mike I'm sure you will be a GREAT EMBASSADOR for your state and welcome them with open arms! You too Flats! Me - give me 4 - 6 inches of quality ice and I'll be catching, the pike, walleye, and perch you guys do all year. ( Available all year long but I consider them core fish, keepers within regs, but much tastier/firmer from the cold water ) Merry Christmas, Doug & Meesh
