Some people just have that one fly that always seems to work when nothing else is working. Anyone care to share there favorite go to pattern?

 

I don't have enough experence yet with flies but have been told that "The Usual" by Fran Betters is a craker jack go to fly.

 

MATERIALS

 

Hook: Partridge SLD

Thread: Fire Orange 6/0

Wing: Snowshoe Hare fur from toe of foot.

Tail: Same as wing

Body: Snowshoe Hare fur from heel of foot

Gold ribbed hairs ear. A great pattern that probably everone knows, but heres the recipe anyways:

 

Thread: Brown or tan

Tail: hairs fur or patridge

Body: natural hairs dubbing

Rib: gold wire

Thorax: natural hairs dubbing

Wingcasing: mottled turkey

when all else fails...............WOOLY BUGGER BABY olive and black...

And in the summer and fall..A foam ant with bills leg and antennae material or a foam beetle.

I always find my-self turning to the Renegade and variations of it. My favorite is the dead chicken;

one grizzly hackle tied at hook bend, some peacock herl for a body and another grizzly hackle tied at head. Sizes 12-18 seem to produce every-where. You can play with colored grizzly also.

There's three patterns that I use most frequently for various scenarios

 

Mayflies/caddis on the water

 

1. CDC and Elk

 

2. Snowshoe Emerger

 

3. The Usual

 

Rising fish but nothing visible. Two of my own midge patterns

Zebra midge in any of the color combos I've been experimenting with. Hot combos lately have been a wine thread with copper wire and copper T-bead, purple wire with same bead and wire and then olive thread with the same bead and wire. The secret .. a coating of Loc-Tite super glue. Adds a nice sheen to the pattern when wet.
