Andreas Lestander 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2013 In this video I made I want to show you a technique of trimming deerhair with a lighter. Sure many of you fellow flytiers have seen this before, but nevertheless, here you go! Best regards, Andreas
flytire 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2013 i just had a vision of me burning down my tying room if i ever tried that i'm glad it works for you
Andreas Lestander 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2013 Besides the time I did this recording I like to keep my burning out of the house. A good tip is to tie up a few and have a go out in the fresh air.
Crackaig 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2013 Its a great way to trim deer hair, It has the added advantage of sealing the ends. Before you do it though I'd recommend taking precautions. Something like this- Apparently the process is a little smelly. I wouldn't know as, thanks to a really nasty hydraulic oil I worked with, I have no sense of spell, well very little anyway. Cheers, A. williamhj 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2013 I might avoid using varnish or hard as nails with that technique

Piker20 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2013 That looks great. Might play on some spun hair to get the feel for it before trying it on some muddler heads.

Crackaig 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2013 If you have, or get one of the flameless lighters, and use the rotary function of your vice it is like turning a shape on a lathe. But be careful approach the deer hair slowly, stop when it starts to singe. One false move and you'll torch the lot. Cheers, C.
Piker20 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2013 I've nearly burnt my tying shed down once already so whats a second attempt! I will use the rotary and like you say, softly slowly.

Guest Report post Posted May 1, 2013 Looks like you could easily burn through the whip finish head.
mikechell 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2013 A good pair of scissors and a razor blade, same look without that awful stench of burnt hair. It's a neat looking technique, just not worth the smell.
