  1. Sorry for the long delay in posts, but there really hasn't been anything to report until this morning. I received flies from Day5 today. Thay are really good looking flies and will catch your eye as well as fish. Nice use of the materials Day5 but you didn't need to send it back, I know you will feel the loss of not having it on your desk. The flies are a tad naked though. There are no toe-tags!! So I can make some up this time since they look so worthy. Did you have a name for them? They look like Party Hoppers but if I hear from you before the last flies arrive I will defer to your choice. Just a couple more to go folks. One package was returned to sender and thus will be a few days late. I can't believe the price difference for our Postal systems. This package that Day5 sent me was 90 cents to mail. For me it will be over $4 to mail a similar package back to the U.S. Incase you guys were wondering why I needed the $3 from you to return them. Canada Post is this "entity" that just does what it wants and doesn't consider complaints made by us regarding their rediculous rates. Anyway folks, I digress. This Challenge has netted some of the best challenge flies I have seen to date. I do promise as I mentioned before, that I will endeavour to "notch it up," for next Fall. Take care all, I'll let you know when the last packages arrive....Kerry
  2. Looking forward to their arrival. Thanks for being a great swapmeister Justin!!!
  3. The only thing I might look at in the first pattern is the hook gap. How dense is the body; Will it give enough to make the gap wider when the fish bites it? Other than that minor point it is a really nice pattern.
  4. I think my wife passed that stage many years ago. Now she will suspiciously avoid unmarked packages in the freezer and my desk. Really she has no problem with animal parts, she just doesn't want to see them everywhere. Even when we had the farm she prefered to have the animals sent out to the butchers and get it back in plain brown wrappers. Things get better with time and if you actually invite her to sit down while you explain what you are doing, she may 1) never ask again or 2) start tying with you. Good luck "I'm rootin' for you, remember we're all in this together."

    Happy B-Day

    Hey Happy Birthday!
  6. I like the aesthetics of my desk. It is somewhere aound 120 years old and a rolltop to boot. It really isn't a tying desk rather a desk meant for filing papers, keeping stamps, other sundry for letter writing and probably office work. It does have alot of storage, but the storage under the rooltop is not convenient. Still I like how it feels to sit and tie at it. I have so much stuff that really no desk could store it all unless it filled the best part of the room anyway. The feel of tying at an antique desk and the large drawers and desktop are great. The amount of wasted space I cannot use is a drawbck, but I doubt I will change anytime soon.
  7. Well I had to try the bathtub test since there is no open water around here. The thing floats very well. There is quite alot of deer hair around the cup, which may give it the extra floatability....note to myself, ask wife to get out first??!! Philly did you do some pictures of the pattern you mention here?
  8. You could try putting an ad in the local paper? Some papers allow free ads for community events or orginizations.
  9. Isn't technology amazing! If I think back to a friend of mine who had it in the '60's things were alot different for him. I'm so glad to here that your daughter is doing well. Does she fish by the way?
  10. I don't know if you could use that kind of cutter on suede or not. I know of course it would work on foam. Let me know if you come up with an idea.
  11. Now that is a good looking fly. I would think it would work on Coastal Cutthroats as well?
  12. It should be great! The first time I used it I learned a valuable lesson though.....make sure the sheep isn't still attached.
  13. Ya know I WAS too kind to you guys!!! I can't believe my generosity! I have to stop my better nature from getting the best of me!! Next time it's gruel for all of you! Hahaha....oh wait, that's for the local orphanage! Okay you win this time but I'll think of something truly diabolical for next Fall! :j_k:
  14. This is one of mine. You can see the tying sequence if you click on the "My Fly Patterns" button on the bottom of my post.
  15. I think you need to write the story about this when you are done. It has alot of potential for a good read. I continue to follow the saga.
  16. I had a look at your streamers and have to agree he is getting a heck of a deal. I'm not sure what you guys pay on that coast but here the average trout fly runs $1.95, fancier streamers go up as high as $4.95. I'm not saying that is what you should charge, but perhaps have two price ranges for streamers, the more complicated patterns would be a little higher. I hope this works well for you and speaking from some experience, you will either love tying for $$$ or hate it. I know I did it for two years and then couldn't stand the sight of my vise for two years afterwards. A friend of mine though, did it for many years and really enjoyed it. Don't want to discourage you, just hope you find yourself enjoying the business.
  17. These may be on the other end of the spectrum. These are used on Kootenay Lake in B.C. which, while no Great Lake is a very large body of water. Can't cast them though....well maybe you could but yell "Fore!" or something if you try. By the way, these were the proto-types, the actual bucktails we are using are tied with single barbless trailers.
  18. You are both welcome. Glad you have room for it and I hope you never need it. Nice name by the way, Welsh? I have a daughter Kalila. Kind of close.
  19. Hey Jeremy. I used suede that I have had in my desk for about 8 years. I use it for stonefly nymphs as well. Yes I hand cut each one individually, I hope they don't look too ridiculous, but I think they should work.
  20. I received Ashleys flies today! Another nice set of flies. Sort of a semi-foam nymph which looks good to me. Jus a few more sets to come in and we are done....Kerry

    Happy Easter

Are you sure that's the easter bunny and not Rudolph? I would think judging by the size of the ears that if it was really the bunny, your dog would be impregnated and a little worse for wear? Anyway Happy Easter and may the bunny of benevolance bounce upon your brow.
  22. This is probably a Canadian tip as the U.S. mail rate are low enough that I wouldn't care how big the box I was mailing was. You guys can airmail me an Altoids box from the U.S. for less than $2 and for me it is $6.85 from Canada to most U.S. states. I can sometimes get around this by building my own shipping boxes for flies that are too large to fit in a cd case but small enough not to need an Altoids type box. I cut two squares of cardboard out, to represent the size of box I'll need to hold the flies. I then cut a bunch of 1/4" strips the same length as the sides of the squares. Then hot glue a border of strips around the edges, you may have to trim one or two. Then another layer, try overlapping the corners for strength. If you build this up by 2 to 3 layers and mail it in the right thickness envelope, you can cut your costs by $3 or more. The top of the box is held on by elastic bands. I know for one swap it may not be worth it, but if you do alot of swapping (as I did) it can cut your costs quite a bit. My tip of the month, yours free.
  23. Simplicity rules! I could turn this into salmon fry with very little effort. Nice job Deeky.
  24. Thankyou sir. May each fish you catch be the fish of a lifetime
  25. That sounds so uplifting!....Okay I promise, no more!
