  1. a little ocd in the spooled materials department but otherwise a great tying area
  2. hmmm after 30+ years of keeping capes and saddles in the original sealed up zip lock bag with no signs of rot, fungus, mildew etc i must be doing something right? i would suspect keeping them sealed up contains the oils in the skins from drying out completely and prevents bugs from getting in just my experience who knows? (i live in connecticut where its humid in the spring, summer and fall while its dry in the winter. i also lived in the more dryer state of colorado for 11 years and did not notice any adverse changes in the cape and saddle skins that were sealed in the original packaging. again its just my experience)
  3. i think you should pluck 1 feather and give each color a try. that way youll know if it works or not be creative. experiment

  6. the debate regarding the apostrophe was more or less closed by smallihunter (owner of the website) so I'm wondering how long it will take to debate the difference between "Tying" or "Dressing" a fly gets closed also that subject matter should be started in a new thread we "Tie" flies here in the USA and you "Dress" flies in the UK in the end, does it really matter! a quote from barrytheguide "I might remind members that this is a Fly Tying form and not an English language Forum. You have taken this way off-topic, if you really want to discuss grammar start another thread please."
  7. Most LED lamps will come in different color temps. 5000K (more blue) to 2500K (yellow) That's why I said "TRY BEFORE YOU BUY"
  8. Try before you buy Leds may be too blue for you eyes
  9. depending on the length of the tail spade hackle fibers that contain webby butt ends CAN still be used!
  10. ive been waiting for an address from the swapmeister to send in my flies but there has been no response or any other communication from him regarding this swap. so, i think i'll pull my name and flies from this swap and donate them to a chapter that is more local to me

  15. usa tyers dont forget to fill out a usps customs form available at your local post office. they can be found in the forms area or ask the postmaster for one. it must be filled out and handed in with your package http://about.usps.com/forms/ps2976.pdf i always declare as a gift and a value of no more than $5 with a description of "fishing lure/fly" make note of how much it costs to mail to the europe destination and assume it will cost the same to return back to usa. if the swapmeister requests return postage by Paypal, then you'll know how much to send + any currency exchange rates otherwise the swapper should get in touch with the swapmeister to figure out the arrangement for return postage
  16. Fly tyers can be masters of making things complicated!
  17. not guilty here! fly tying should be fun and shouldn't require quantum mechanics and string theory to mix a small batch of dubbing

  19. copper john its a good fly for somebody but its totally useless in my fly box
  20. square lead from performance flies. you can use it just like round lead wire
  21. testing or tracking any fly in a bucket/bowl/glass of water is really useless in my opinion. it doesn't replicate the actual moving stream/river condition where the fly will be used
  22. to my eye it looks too grizzly the color only matters to YOU. if You accept it as cree then that's what it is
  23. from the interweb "Chemical sharpening of hooks The points of each hook are first made with a normal needle grinding method. The wire then goes throughout all the other stages to make it into a finished hook and it is then heat-treated. After that the hooks go through a process in which a chemical attacks the surface. The thinner parts of the wire are affected and, in particular, the point. The chemical smoothes or "eats away" the metal and, in effect, refines the point. This is quite a critical operation because if the chemical sharpening goes on too long it will eventually dull the point and may weaken the barb. Furthermore, if the chemical attacks one side of the point more than the other then the point will be weakened. Finally, it is important to remember that chemical sharpening will not make a weaker point into a strong one. It is more likely to make a suspect point even weaker! The method used is similar to that which has been used for surgical needles for many years. NOTE *** In most cases trying to sharpen chemically or laser sharpened hooks will actually blunt them!"
