March Flies From the Vise

It was Hopper night at the fly tying club yesterday.  We tied up a few flies including this Hoptimus Prime pattern from FFF.  

  • Hook: Fulling Mill 5095 - Competition Heavyweight Black Nickel - Barbless - 8
  • Thread: Semperfli Classic Waxed Thread - 6/0 - Tan
  • Body 1: Chicone's Fettuccine Foam - Gold
  • Body 2: Chicone's Fettuccine Foam - Green
  • Body 3: Chicone's Fettuccine Foam - Yellow
  • Wing: Fulling Mill Ultra Dry Yarn - White
  • Legs: Round Rubber Legs - Medium
  • Dubbing: Fulling Mill Ultra Dry Dub - Green
  • Overwing: Bug Foam 1MM - Tan
  • Glue: Loctite Gel Control Super Glue

That opener Box is gonna be pretty awesome 
 

 I saw a Messinger original my local shop and wanted  to give it a go.  It’s kinda tricky tying the legs but I found detailed instructions and i can’t wait to fish it.

Mr. Roll up, The twisted foam body on that hopper is pretty nifty. I’ll have to try that.

Tail - Golden pheasant crest feather
Butt - Black ostrich herl
Ribbing - Oval silver tinsel
Body - Flat silver tinsel
Hackle - Black tied on as a collar and tied back and down
Wing - Black moose hair tied low over the body
Cheeks - Jungle cock eyes or substitute

Tip - Oval silver tinsel
Tag - Short strand of fluorescent green yarn or floss
Ribbing - Oval silver tinsel
Body - Rear half, fluorescent green yarn or floss; the front half, peacock herl
Hackle - Black tied on as a collar and tied back and down; then peacock sword feather barbs tied in at the throat
Wing - Dyed black squirrel tail tied low over the body

This pattern is also known as the Rutledge.

Post: dark dun Z-lon

Tail: dark dun micro fibbets

Abdomen: BWO dyed and stripped peacock herl

Hackle: whiting saddle, gray grizzly variant

Abdomen: adams gray superfine

I tied some juvenile damsel nymphs for next week.  These guys are just under an inch long.

  • Hook: Curved Nymph Hook, 2XL, Size 14, (Orvis 8A03, TMC 2302, Firehole 718)
  • Thread: 70 DN or 8/0, Olive (Uni 8/0 Olive used)
  • Tail & Body: Marabou Blood Quill, Olive or Damsel Olive
  • Rib: Small Wire, Color your choice
  • Wing Case: Thin Skin
  • Legs: Hen Saddle, Olive
  • Eyes: Mono Eyes, small
  • Thorax: Ice Dub, Olive
