stanbiker 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2010 what do you use to keep your spools from unwinding when you are not using them? I watched a video on the Nor-vise site and his tinsel spool had something on it that looked like the elastic on a tippet spool. I was looking for a source, or instructions if they are home made. Thanks!
MarianC 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2010 with a cutter, make a small cut on the side of the spool, all the Uni threads have that cut, after removing the thread from the bobin holder, simply pass the thred in that small cut
flytire 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2010 i usually use the pre-made slit that comes on almost all spooled fly tying materials or the end caps that come on some spooled fly tying materials or you can make your own spool miner by getting the correct diameter book binding comb you can also use small corks. hold the thread over the hole in the spool and insert the cork there is a newer product called uni lok http://www.lakelandflytying.com/2118/products/Uni_Lok.aspx you can make some using a bead, elastic tape and heat shrink tubing http://www.lakelandflytying.com/1949/produ...pool_hands.aspx slip a cap over the end of your bobbin holder to keep the thread from slipping out http://www.lakelandflytying.com/2798/produ...ad_Keepers.aspx slip an o-ring on the tube of the bobbin holder to keep the thread from slipping out http://www.lakelandflytying.com/2634/produ...lder_Rings.aspx
Chase Creek 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2010 The binding comb idea works great, I've also used those little elastic bands the girls call "scrunchies". They use them to make pony tales. Get the smallest ones.

JohnP 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2010 Yeah, but then you miss out on the fun of trying to respool 20 yards of fine gold wire after it unspools itself. Not to mention four-strand floss spools, which I always manage to make a mess out of. :crying:

Guess I'll just have to tie 12 flies. I've recently saw the idea of using book binding comb but haven't got by the office supply store to pick some up. blakejd 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2010 J Stockard has the perfect thing for this they are called the fly tying spool hands. http://www.jsng.coflyfishim/cgi-bin/item/O...pool-Hands.html Yup I picked up a dozen or so of these on my last J stockard order. I could use a dozen more. They're perfect for things like wire and tinsel that don't have the little cut in the side like thread spools do.
