As July approaches in the upper midwest, I have been busy trying out Hex patterns. I did some research about good Hex patterns and decided to try something called a flex-hex. Last year I used a foam, extended body pattern shown here in the first photo. I had a lot of strikes, and a lot of missed hook sets. Now, that is to be expected, since it is dark and I was pretty amped up and probably set too fast.  But according to John Nebel, perhaps the extended body pushes the hook out of the fish's mouth during a strike. Using a jointed pattern might be more effective as the tail would fold up in the fish's mouth and get out of the way during a strike. So , I went to the vise and began tying some up. The flex hex is shown in the second photo. Hopefully in a week or so, I can report if the hooksets were more successful!

Not a huge CdC wing fan but, in smaller sized muddlers like this, the lack of bulk at the tie-in area is nice.

hook - WFC Model 3 #14
thread - Veevus 8/0 tan
tag - UTC 140 chartreuse/UV resin
rib - Mirage Flash opal
body - Ice Dub hare’s ear tan
wing - CdC tan
head - deer hair

Nice looking flies, very similar profile to Gartside's Sparrow,  with very different materials.

Trying a Hi-Vis parachute version of the Flex-Hex. Perhaps I should have dubbed up further on the jointed piece, but on some previous attempts, I inadvertently crowded the joint and it did not move as freely as I wanted.
