July Flies From the Vise

I was actually worried about that same thing... Believe it or not, picked up a "kit" from Orvis while I was over car shopping the other day.  Came with these hooks and pre formed/slotted bodies.  I'll maybe shave down the underside of the foam to add a little more clearance.

One thing that helps is to ignore the hole and cut a shallow groove along the bottom of the foam to put the hook in.  Wrap the hook with thread in a spiral pattern to give glue something to grab.  This gives a better hook gap.  Learned that from "Essential Saltwater Flies" by Jawarowski.  Lots of crossover between salt and freshwater flies.

Great tip.  The body is already slotted 1/2 way up though.  I could/need to bulk up the hook shank so it doesn't go half way into the body.  Could wrap some chenille before hand too I suppose.

A carefully placed bead of glue?  Or maybe glue the whole thing shut a cut in your own slot to your liking?  Just a couple ideas and i won't even charge you 2 cents!

Apricot Haze

Stephan Banakas

Hook - Mustad 3399, 3906, 3906B 9671 or equivalent size 8-10-12

Weight - Lead free wire

Thread - Brown

Tail - Brown marabou

Hackle - Brown

Body - Worm brown ultra-chenille

This is just another of the hundreds of variations of a wooly bugger/worm

Original recipe did not call for a wire rib but if you need it then add it to your fly. I just embedded the hackle in the valley between the chenille wraps.

I have some 1/64' drill bits that I use in a dremel  tool to drill holes in the foam. wrap the hook with thread. Start the foam and put a drop of superglue on the thread right by the foam,

then slide the foam over the thread.  Have gasket punches thaat I drill the bodies out with.

Hatching Foam Pupa

Nice tie.

Geat idea.

I think I would switch to a hen hackle for the thorax/legs, maybe both.

Thanks for posting the pattern.
