The challenge thread!

Below is my first attempt at the Para Adams.  I was getting ready to tie some fresh Adams for my fly box when I saw the challenge.  It seems a little rough to me so any input would be appreciated.  I would like to get the hackle to splay out a little more flat.  The body material could be finer too.  Other than that I'll take it.  Now to tie up a couple dozen for mine and the wife's fly boxes.

Parachute Adams:

Hook: #12 Daiichi 1180 (Standard dry fly hook)

Thread: 8/0 black Uni

Tail: Mix of Grizzly and Coachman Brown Hackle Fibers

Body: Muskrat

Wingpost: White Calf tail

Hackle: Grizzly and Coachman Brown

Next Up:  Royal Trude

I think it looks good.  Tying parachutes I've pretty much given up tying off the hackle along to shaft of the hook. I whip finish on the post. Klinkhammer style. I think it makes for a much neater look. The other thing I do is leave a bit of bare stem on the hackle between the tie in and the first fibers. That helps keep the first and succeeding wraps flatter.  I like the calf tail post you used. I hate that slippery stuff.

Wow Norm, got to be the nicest royal trude I've seen, almost to nice to fish with.

I think I tried tying this fly five or six years ago. Didn’t go so well then. Still had some trouble with it and I’d like to make a cleaner one but it’ll fish so I’m happy.

Next up: Spruce streamer. Dark or light, pick your poison.

Spruce Streamer

Spruce-Fly.jpg

Hook: Herter's 423 (#8, 3xl)

Thread: 70D, black

Tail: Peacock sword

Rib: 1 strand DMC metallic thread, light gold

Body: red roving wood/peacock hurl (40/60)

Wing: India cape, ginger badger, splayed

Hackle: India cape, silver badger

Critique: The wing is way too long, should be roughly 1 1/2 x the hook shank, not 2x.  I should have continued the rib through the peacock hurl for durability.  And before taking the photo, I should have let the wing dry after licking my fingers and then caressing the fly.  I do that alot, I've got issues.
