Cock Robin

Joseph Kvitsky

Hook - Mustad 94720
Thread - Black
Tip - Gold oval tinsel
Body - Rear half is yellow floss and front half is red floss
Rib - Gold oval tinsel
Throat - White bucktail tied short
Wing - Orange bucktail under white bucktail under orange bucktail

Notes: There are several diverse versions of flies referred to as the Cock Robin ranging from sparsely dressed dabblers all the way to the other end of the spectrum with fully dressed classic Atlantic salmon irons. Somewhere in the middle lies the streamer version of the fly. It was developed by Mr. Joseph Kvitsky of Westfield, Massachusetts. The Cock Robin is considered a great producing fly for the Northeast’s landlocked salmon.

Memphremagog Smelt

Henry McGowan

Hook - Mustad 94720
Thread - White
Ribbing - Flat silver tinsel
Body - Orange silk floss
Belly - White bucktail
Throat - Red hackle fibers
Wing - Yellow bucktail under purple bucktail
Topping - 3-4 peacock herl
Cheek - Patridge back feather
Head - Black

Notes: Straddling the boarder of Quebec and Vermont, Lake Memphremagog has a healthy population of smelts which are preyed upon by landlocked salmon, bass, trout and other apex predators. Trolling the streamer is a common method of fishing the deeper waters. McGowan declared that “Any damn fool can do … dragging a sliver of tin through deep water on a metal line for rainbows, lakers and such”. McGowan was a Memphremagog guide and developed the streamer around 1930.

On FAOL, (John 52948) tied this fly for a fly swap and sent extras. John’s version was on a jig style hook with brass bead head.  I had the opportunity to fish it with very good success.  I took some liberty with it, changing it to more of a soft hackle for further up in the water column.

Hope to get a chance to fish it next year

John ties it much much better.

Wired PT soft hackle

Vevus , brown thread under, orange coller

tail Pheasant fibers

body two fine brown wires one copper

spectra black dub thorax

partridge.

HIpp's Soft Bodied Poppers

Not alot of time for tying flies lately, a few minute before bed each night.  Been working on these in stages and was able to finish them up last night as the rains reprieved me from mowing the lawn.  Kind of a cool little pattern that I'll probably come back to over the winter.  Always looking for different ideas for tails/legs/skirts.  I like to looks of the splayed feathers for legs best, didn't realize the super glue would wick as much as it did.  I'll have to find out what the fish think, hopefully this weekend.

Boa yarn flies. Tie in boa yarn and palmer it up the shank. Superglue tie off. Silver is tied with legs.  Can also tie with bead head.

for really weird action tie in the head in near the bend.

Premier eyelash yarn is similar.

Champlain-Jane-1080.jpg

Champlain Jane

Charlie Mann

Hook - Mustad 94720
Thread - Red
Underbody - Red body braid
Body - Pearl braided mylar tubing
Tail - Pearl braided mylar tubing tag picked out
Throat - Pearl braided mylar tubing picked out
Wing - Purple or violet bucktail
Topping - Peacock herl
Head - Red

Notes: Years ago while tying flies at a trade show Charlie was approached by a Vermont guide who took clients fishing on Lake Champlain. He gave Charlie a pinkish colored streamer pattern he had called a Booker Special. Charlie modified the pattern and christened it the Champlain Jane in recognition of the Vermont guide. The streamer has been quite a fish getter over the years and has found more than a few kypes on the Miramichi River when tied on a salmon hook
