Anvil Atlas. It's a tank. Not only is it a great vise, but you can use it as a self defense weapon if you have to knock someone out.

 

Most importantly it's made in AMERICA!

gee -- so, as a newbie, using the vise that came with the basic kit I got from Bass Pro Shop (I don't even know the name of my vise - I call it Chuck <img src="http://www.flytyingforum.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> )...I decided to check out this thread in order to develop a short list of vises to check out, for upgrade purposes....and you people haven't really been of much help! you're all over the board!

 

 

Anvil Atlas. Best vise for the money. Can't beat it.

I've got an Anvil Apex. A good vise. I wouldn't reccomend it for those without a fairly strong grip, as it takes some pressure to get the hook to set. I love it, it's a backup and very secure with excellent customer support.

The one I missed/other I just recently got a Zephr Crown Vise from Sportsman's for my B-Day

I started with a Regal, but the jaws were so wide that i had trouble with small hooks, so i swapped it for a Renzetti Saltwater Traveler. I liked it okay but never could find a comfortable place for my left hand. I few years ago i was lucky enough to pick up a LAW bench vise. I think it's the finest vise ever made; it certainly is a better vise than i am a tyer, but it makes me happy to use it. There's not one thing about it i'd change. I also have an Atlas Apex that i use as a backup or if my kids want to tie with me.

As of this week I now use a Peak rotary with c clamp. I ordered the brass bolt

upgrade and am awaiting it's arrival. This is it with a #14 rubber legs swimming

caddis pupa. Very smooth operation, but still getting use to it.---John

I currently have a cheap super AA I got from j stockard. Its better than the even cheaper master vice I had before, but the cam lever is wearing out, and now the threads are stripped on the shaft. So it wobbles on the vise stem now. Duct tape holds it still. Obviously I'm saving for a new one. I'm stuck between a peak, and a few griffins. $150 is my budget since I have my 2nd kid on the way. I like the looks of the griffins more, but I hear so many good thing about peak. I need to try them out before I buy, if I can find them at my local shops.

Griffin 3ARP Vise. I found it in the bargain bin a few years ago for $40 at my local big box sporting goods store, great vise, holds many different sizes of hooks very well.

I just splurged on a Dyna King Ultimate Indexer pedestal. I love this thing; not sure if I'll need all the bells and whistles but, I'm glad to have them.

I have a wonderful Thompson Model A (or B, not sure, marked Thompson and DHT in several spots) that I simply love, cost me a whopping 20 or so dollars. I occasionally get the urge to buy a Griffin stationary (I have no need, nor can I really afford, a fancy rotary) but have no real reason to; the Thompson grips a hook, well... like a vise.

 

I will probably buy a 2nd model A and a set of Midge Jaws, for a back up vise and for tying smaller than 18s. Plus, at times, like when I laquer a quill body and wait for it to dry, it would be nice to have 2 vises.

Just started tying 2 months ago using Cabela's deluxe tool kit. Great starter kit but have ordered a Regal Medallion.
