Mop Fly Variant

Recommended Posts

Definitely keep it going. I'm amazed at the creativity. Most other sites I'm on seem to be at the Crane Fly larva stage. Definitely going to tie up some these patterns. I've got a cinder worm pattern in mind. I'll post it once I get my new tying bench set up and get back to tying.

I have a few more patterns brewing that will be posted.

Cinder worm would definitely be a good one to do!

Yellow = chartreuse ... basically florescent yellow.

Thanks Mike, florescent yellow would be a great attractor color.

I've got the "yellow" ... my favorite color for these.

I thought I had some of mine (richmc's) on this computer ... but no.

I'll post pictures from home ... if I remember to.

Here is the SBS that PoopDeck requested.

Sculpin MoP Revision A

Finished length: 2-1/2”

Mop: Tan

Hook: Mustad #2 79580 4x long

Thread: Flat Waxed Nylon Tan

Dumbell Eyes: Medium (covered over with MoP)

Mono: 30# 4” long

Feathers: Pheasant butt feathers 2ea

Eyes: 3D 3.5MM

Tear Mender

Brown sharpies: a fine point and an extra fine point

Tail Construction:

1. Cut two sections of MoP for the tail as shown (approx 1-1/2” lg)

Apply tear mender length wise and lightly clamp, I used chip clips.

Set aside to dry for 5 min before using.

2. Attach mono between two points and lay down a thread base then attach the tail to the mono.

3. Lay down a thread base then attach the tail to the hook with thread and apply ca glue.

The tail should extend beyond the hook bend ¾”.

Tie in some lead for weight or use lead barbell eyes as I have done.

The weight will cause hook point to ride up as shown.

4. Mark a line 3/8” from the end of the tail with the

extra fine sharpie.

5. Then using scissors taper the tail from approx 1/16” to 1/8”.

The tail should gradually get thicker as you approach the 3/8” mark.

6. Squeeze the 3/8” section, this helps to make the tail wider and flatter.

I used a flat jaw vise grip, but a regular vise works just as good.

Tail section is complete.

Body & Head Construction:

1. Build an underbody by wrapping or tying sections of MoP parallel to the hook.

It is best to tie in parallel sections from the head to the 1/2 way point because this fish is flat in the belly and head.

Building a flatter profile will require less trimming in the end.

It is also best to wrap from the mid point to the hook point because this section is round on the fish.

2. A template is helpful to accomplish accurate proportions.

For my template, I copied a banded sculpin picture from google and transferred it to Xcel then sized it to be 2-1/2”.

3. Tie in two feathers for pectoral fins (shiney side facing tail)

4. After the underbody is complete begin wrapping MoP.

I used X wraps around the fins.

5. After completing the underbody I realized the head was not wide enough.

So I wrapped more material over the barbell eyes.

Note: Apply tear mender to the underbody on the head section before wrapping to prevent slippage.

6. Trim to shape, superbond eyes, and color with markers.
