Moshup 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2020 @DFoster Thanks very much. When I’m planning on tying quill bodies I do soak the quills in lukewarm water for a few hours. I’m afraid when I get a quick fancy I may tie a quill without soaking like the one above. I remember Dave Brandt at the shows carrying little biological sample glass tubes with his quills soaking in them. Nice guy and I’ll miss seeing him at events. chugbug27 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2020 Too kind Mark, but with what you sent I don't think I'll ever run out, not in this lifetime anyways. The different colors along the flank are great, by the way.

Maybe got it to the 80% point on 1st try. Didn't have a suitable body material so substituted moose body hair.

Chris_in_Louisiana 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2020 Feel free to file this one under "Ugly, but Effective." I call it a Topwater Chimera (Head of a goat. Mane of a Lion. Tail of a serpent.) I patched it together back in late March/early April thinking it might be an effective redfish fly. To date, I've yet to catch a red on it, but Speckled Trout and Largemouth Bass both seem to have an affinity for it. The pattern utilzies foam spider bodies for the head (a la Bob Clouser's Floating Minnow) and glides along the surface with minimal disturbance. I tied this one up recently for a SBS blog post. Hook: Pencil Popper Hook (Size 1) Tail: Zonker Strip (Chartreuse) Body: Estaz or Ice Chenille (Chartreuse) Collar: Crosscut Rabbit Strip (Chartreuse) with black Estaz or Ice Chenille Head: Large Foam Spider Bodies (2x) superglued together along hook shank.
