Ann's flies - Day 3.

Borcher's Drake - This fly was originated by Ann Schweigert and originally used condor quill fibers for the body.  Ausable river guide Ernie Borcher added grizzly hackle to the brown and the fly became the Borcher's Drake Special.

Hook - Mustad 94840 or 94833, 8-18

Thread - black

Tail - 2-3 moose main fibers

Body - turkey quill fibers

Wings - light dun hackle tips

Hackle - grizzly and brown

i'm confused. which happens more often than not

what-confused.gif

if ernie borcher added a grizzly hackle to the schweigert original pattern, what was the original schweiert pattern called?

This fly was originated by Anne Schwiegert, who ran a fly shop in Roscommon. The original hackle was brown, and the original body was condor quill fibers. Ernie Borcher, an AuSable river guide, added the grizzly hackle to the brown and it then became known as the Borchers's Drake. Tied spent wing it's known as Borcher's Special.

Got my info from fly historian, Tom Deschaine's work.  I believe she tied with grizzly only originally.  And I can be confused easily too!

I've been tying up some Stimulators, not sure whether they would be consider trout or panfish flies.  More likely I'll use them for panfish, since we don't have any giant stonefly hatches around here.

Tail - deer hair(from a deer's mask)

Body - Senyo Laser Dubbing

Body Hackle -brown

Fine looking group-  Stimulators work well on newly stocked trout even if you don't have the large stonefly hatch.

AuSable Queen - This pattern was not as widely known as her AuSable King pattern.  As the name implies it's the female version tied with an egg case and uses a hair wing.  Ann first tied this pattern in the 1950's.

Ann's ties - Day 7.

Lake Erie King - A blowfly imitation designed by Ann Schweigert and Clem Thompson in the mid 1950's.  Clem used this when he fished at his cabin on Houghton Lake.  Ann's husband, Jack, had a limerick about this pattern:

“This is the fly that’s used by Clem,

He flips it out and back again,

He very seldom catches a fish,

But calls it their best dish.”
