  1. These days, I usually use it as an additive to other dubbings for the thorax on Mayflies and bodies on some Caddis and Stonefly patterns... PT/TB
  2. Higa's S.O.S. was originally tied in Black and designed as a Baetis pattern in sizes #16-#20. With the red wing case, it falls more into the attractor category so anything goes. I have seen them tied in Olive, Tan, Pink & Purple - generally in those same sizes... PT/TB
  3. I have used Ligas dubbing since the early 80's when I got it for this price. It's $2.00 these days. I find that it is a much coarser material than Anton from either Wapsi or Spirit River (Hareline) and it does not have the natural sparkle of either. It might be more manageable after carding, but I have never tried it as a substitute for patterns that call for Antron... I use the two combs below to prepare Antron for use as a veil on GLF's Sparkle Pupa. I doubt I would get the same results with Ligas dubbing... PT/TB
  4. I don't think Trout really have a preference and haven't noticed that there have been any refusals with the wing case tied on top: http://www.tacticalflyfisher.com/blog/wingcases-shellbacks-and-wings-to-invert-or-not-to-invert-that-is-the-question/ PT/TB
  5. Steve probably re-named and moved his site. He has an online store ,which is probably better served by a different host than Tripod. PT/TB
  6. I use a lot of Myran compartment boxes for soft hackles but specifically used this Wheatley Box for a bunch that I tied up for Fall use in the Firehole River, in Yellowstone National Park: Myran... Myran... Wheatley... PT/TB

  8. EP Trigger Point International Fiber material is treated with Water Shed. The regular EP Fibers are not. As far as I know, none of the other suggested substitutes listed in the above comments are treated with Water Shed. http://www.hareline.com/epq.html This is Water Shed: https://www.feather-craft.com/watershed-permanent-waterproofing-liquid ...and Poly, although it has inherent floating characteristics, does not come in as wide a color range as EP Trigger Point Fibers... Rowan Nyman's DOA Cripple BWO...I use a lot of TP INT'l for Mayflies, Midges & Caddis patterns... PT/TB
  9. I recently purchased this Patagonia Stealth Atom Sling for steelheading on The Grande Ronde, Clearwater, Snake & Salmon Rivers. It works just fine: https://www.patagonia.com/product/stealth-atom-fly-fishing-sling-pack-8-liters/48327.html?dwvar_48327_color=FGE&cgid=sport-fly-fishing-packs-gear#tile-9=&start=1&sz=24 PT/TB
  10. THIS...get it, read it, incorporate the information into the ties used to fish emerging behavior: https://www.amazon.com/Tying-Emergers-Complete-Ted-Leeson/dp/1571883061 PT/TB
  11. I have about ten years of patterns I have tied on my Blog. All of the recipes have been entered into spiral notebooks that I keep: I just like to keep a handwritten record of the ties that I do... PT/TB
  12. I have always enjoyed your ties Lucian. The link that was put up by chugbug27, to Steve Schalla's site, features many of the patterns that I have found useful in the Eastern Sierra and in Montana. Although this isn't strictly a Zebra Midge, it is a Paul Freeman pattern that he developed for the San Juan River. It has served me well over the past couple of seasons... PT/TB
  13. 90 traditional Steelhead patterns: Now it's time to start swinging them in some of these places: PT/TB
  14. I put this up a number of years ago...it is still in use: https://planettrout.wordpress.com/2010/11/25/a-tying-box/ PT/TB
  15. chugbug27, I have tied a lot of different jig patterns and they have been used by both me and my son Michael in the Eastern Sierra, on the Madison and Yellowstone Rivers and on rivers in the East including the West Branch of the Croton, The Delaware, Esopus Creek and some other waters. This is a Brown my kid recently took on the West Branch of the Croton: ...on this Jig pattern #16: I used this jig pattern, as an anchor, last Fall on the East Walker River up in Bridgeport, CA: The EWR... ...and it enticed a bunch of fat Rainbows. I have never purchased any jig pattern in a fly shop on the Eastside or anywhere else. I trust the patterns I tie...because they work... Finally, this stonefly jig pattern, tied with micro polar chenille, is just plain deadly anywhere we have used it... PT/TB

  18. So...this is the first fly I have tied since the last of April. Packing, cataract surgery and moving up to Pullman, WA then installing all new wood floors and unpacking: GSB's #6 & #7's...a trip down here, to Peck, ID for hooks and materials from Poppy... ...doing a bunch of traditional, intruders and other chrome oriented patterns to toss in the Salmon, Snake, Grande Ronde and this river... 19. Frank Matarelli passed away on August 17, 2018 at the age of 102: http://www.halstedngray.com/obituary/Frank-W.-Matarelli/San-Francisco-California/1810526 This is a photo of some of his flies and tools that my son took last December at The Golden Gate Casting Club: PT/TB
  20. I learned a long time ago that rubber rots and latex disintegrates over time. The late Shane Stalcup came up with D-Rib and Glitter D-Rib. It isn't the vinyl junk that comes on spools. Hareline now distributes it in small and medium. The glitter d-rib comes in medium and works for patterns like this: Which provides a much more definitive segmentation than either rubber, silicone, latex or any of the other products that lay flat. These are the colors of D-Rib distributed by Hareline: http://www.hareline.com/dr12.html The medium glitter D-Rib has been discontinued so one has to look for it now: https://www.americanflyandtackle.com/Glitter-Half-Round-Rib-p/aft204-303.htm These soft hackles were all constructed with D-Rib: There is no need to slather this product with UV Resin...it's practically indestructible...using the proper thread size and color beneath the clear version will result in the bug to be imitated...Below, Shane Stalcup uses his D-Rib on a soft hackle: PT/TB
  21. The upper reaches of the South Fork of the Kern River, above Monache Meadows contain Golden Trout. I started going up there in the late 70's when I got a Jeep Renegade that I tricked out. I have also hiked in for them around Cottonwood Lakes, above Lone Pine, CA. My son Michael caught his first Golden in the SFK in 1987... 22. It is a Southern pattern that was created Don R. Howell. I don't think it would be particularly effective on the "other" Hot Creek in California's Eastern Sierra: https://www.davidsonflyfishing.com/store/flies/hot-creek-special PT/TB
  23. Like flytire, my Blog is always open to anyone with a device that connects to the internet: https://planettrout.wordpress.com PT/TB
  24. I learned "high stick nymphing " from this guy and George Odier, back in 1975 on the Roaring Fork and Frying Pan rivers in CO: http://www.angelfire.com/co2/fothergill/crfbio.html A number of prominent anglers including Lefty Kreh, learned this technique from Chuck and George and passed it on. Some of them are noted in a photograph in the above article. Ed Engle further discusses the Fothergill's technique in his book "Trout Lessons" - Stackpole Books: https://books.google.com/books?id=GmQcpmXXv3YC&pg=PA6&lpg=PA6&dq=Lefty+Kreh+outrigger+technique&source=bl&ots=2NRge7IPKY&sig=6YkFqTKvLYPGwiOlntjGzqjRLMo&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjegs3YhKrcAhXHzIMKHabDAukQ6AEwCHoECAEQAQ#v=onepage&q=Lefty%20Kreh%20outrigger%20technique&f=false Also, this article from Fly Fish Ohio further discuss the topic and a great pattern for high stick nymphing... http://www.flyfishohio.com/Renegade.htm Both of those guys were advocates of Scott Fly Rods and Harry Wilson developed the first true nymph rods. My favorite nymph rod through the 80's and still today, is a 10', 5wt. "G" Series Scott that was custom made by Scott. This was the only Fly Shop in the Roaring Fork Valley in the 70's. I remember standing below a long pool on private property below Woody Creek Bridge on the Fork with George and casting directly upstream with his Scott Rod and using twist-ons for weight. The nymphing was memorable... Chuck Fothergill's Fly Shop in Aspen,CO - 1975 I am upstream here on The East Walker River in Bridgeport, CA using that Scott rod with a Bauer Extreme Perfect Reel. My son Michael. in the foreground is using a Loomis Streamdance 10', 5wt. with a Tibor Freestone Reel. This Winston BIIIX Super 10, 5wt. with a Hatch Reel, here on the Madison River, is my current all around nymphing rod. PT/TB
