I think the best place is in the corner of a fish's mouth.😁

I thought the vise was Ekich. I would love to have one. The workmanship and materials are second to none. But the misses said no way when she saw the price. I could not convince her that is exactly what credit cards are for. I do use his bobbin holder. Expensive?, yep, but quality tools are worth it. I want to get a few more to have my common threads loaded and ready to go.

Fugly Packer How well do these work?
rstaight replied to Hardyrod1974's topic in The Fly Tying Bench
As I mentioned earlier I don't do a lot of hair. If I can substitute foam I will. But when I do use hair it takes me awhile. I try to keep my clumps no larger than the size of a pencil. After it's spun I place my thumb at the back of the hair. Then I use whatever tool from the eye side and push like a SOB. I don't know if my hair packing is tight, loose, or somewhere in between. But I have been told it's more tight then loose. Anyway that's my theory, less is more regarding the clump you start with. -
The flies are fantastic. But tell me about the vise Pete. I see Damascus steel.

I used to make wood bases for baskets. Can be a lot of work for little money when you consider all of the jigs I made to reduce setup time. I did manage to up grade my shop with what little I made.

Out with the old, in with the new. My new fly tying bench

Nice roll top. I also use a roll top. Lots of storage in some. I see some larger openings on the upper right. I would look at building drawers that would fit those openings. You could put a lot of what you have on the large stand in a couple of drawers. I put what ever I can in drawers so it won't get dusty over time. -

Don't tie much hair. But when do I use a pen. -
Sometimes it can get confusing. The ott system is like wire and sheet metal gauges, smaller the number the larger the material. 6/0 is larger than 8/0. The denier system is the opposite, smaller the number the smaller the thread diameter. 70 denier is smaller than 140 denier. I use both systems, I have 10/0 and 12/0 for the very small stuff. I will use 140 denier for my larger fresh and saltwater flies. What I use the most of is UTC 70 denier.

When my thumb or finger gets stuck by the hook point I just check my blood sugars. -
I used to put the instructions (recipe) and a picture in sheet protector and place it in a 3 ring binder. Stopped doing it because it was getting out of hand.

Evan though you have a very nice tying desk, Poopdeck makes a valid point. Not only may a small shop be short on space they may also be short on funds to add such an item to their inventory. I would offer them through your website. If you really want them in shops you may need to put them there on consignment and give the shop owner a small percentage for allowing the floor space. If I was a shop owner that would be the best way for me. That way if they don't move I'm not out the cost.

That just doesn't sound right.😁 -
Was once reading an article in Wood Magazine. There was a story about when one of the editors first started woodworking. He had an old gentleman that he ask to borrow a tool from. The response was; I have three rules that I go by. 1) Don't ask to borrow my tools. Ask for my help and I will go with the tool. 2) Don't ask to borrow my truck. Ask for my help and I will drive the truck. 3) Don't ask to borrow my wife. After a brief pause he finished by saying, In that order.

And there is the rub. Vises that have been mentioned with cams and levers all have "springs" be it an o ring or some other type. The original post did not say spring close or open. Just spring loaded jaws.

Griffin Odysey with cam are available for $100. A Danvise or Griffin Pro are less. I have a Griffin Spyder. It doesn't have the cam but is a true rotary. I now use a Griffin Montana Mongoose. Still have the Spyder and it does get used from time to time.

Nice, I also enjoyed seeing pictures of fish I haven't seen. Really interested in the lines you use and how you get down to depths you do.

I think I am going back to an old brief case. I have tried cloth bags and recently one of Sterlite containers that fit under the bed. Just to much to deal with. If it won't fit in the case I don't need it.

Welcome There are a lot of fantastic folks here willing to help.

I had a tri color collie that passed about 7 years ago. His under coat was perfect dubbing for an Adams dry. Did I try it? You betcha, wish I still had some. Felt like he was with me every time I used an Adams.

I agree with tjm, the one on the left I like better. The one on the right comes to far down the bend. Both will catch fish. You have a good start. Keep at it, you will improve. Look at the examples Silvercreek posted and use those for a benchmark. Again, nice start.
