Need Mail Order Suggestions

Recommended Posts

I have been buying most of our fly tying materials from 1 certain supplier for a good many years, but recently, since I moved, their mail system has been horrible. Out of the last 3 orders, 2 of them has been lost, including the current one. It's hung up somewhere between one carrier who says they turned it over to another carrier, but the 2nd carrier says that are still waiting to get it. Go figure.

So I would like suggestions on a well-stocked, reasonably priced supplier who doesn't charge and arm and a leg for shipping. I do a lot of panfishing and so materials suited for that would be very helpful. But I also tie some trout flies and a lot of trout flies can double as panfish flies, so I need those kinds of materials as well. And it drives me crazy to need 5 items for a certain pattern, and one place has 3 of them and the another has the other 2. That means 2 orders and 2 charges for shipping. I would like to be able to get all my stuff from one place.

So, what are some of the mail order houses that you guys would recommend?

Thanks

BB

I frequent J Stockard and have never had delivery issues. $5 for orders under $100. Free for anything amounting
to more than a hundred.
Wholesale Fly Company for beads, free shipping.

I've been using J Stockard for most everything.

Except for deer belly hair. I just got my first order from Cohen's RUSuperfly and it is the best and most consistent quality belly hair I've seen.

your mail problems dont seem to be the fault of the supplier as long as it was shipped out. its now the postal services problem to sort out

bears den charges actual mailing charges even though their website says 7.95 shipping. some have a flat 5.00 rate while others have free shipping after spending a certain amount

there is no "mother of all fly shops"

all of these shops are good

I have had similar shipping problems with multiple vendors for fly tying, and other products. The problems are usually caused by the transfer to third party shipping vendors, not the vendor where you made your purchase. It appears to me that many of the smaller suppliers contract with a so called shipping specialist, that will pick up all outgoing orders on a "schedule." Once the "seller" "processes" an order, it sits in a bin for pickup by the shipper. I have instances where I see a purchase was "shipped" that day, but was not picked up by the shipping company for 5 to 7 days.

My last hook was from a vendor who used to shipp the same day, and I would get the shipment in 2 or 3 days. This one took a full 14 days to work its way through the third party pickup, which simply sat on the package a few more days and finally turned over the package to the USPS. The USPS got the package to me in 3 days from that last link.

Its these new for PROFIT shipping pickup bundlers who are the problem. Get used to it.

I looked at your profile to see if you were in Canada or on some remote island. Unless you haven't updated your profile since you moved then this is a mystery as everyone does tracking these days. I'm not familiar with bream materials but lots of online suppliers carry just about everything since they all get their inventory from the same name brand houses. FTD is certainly an exception as in Cohen's shop. Some shops carrry their own value priced hooks. If you can't find it at Stockards or Bears Den then is there a particular hard to find item? The other shop that usually has discounts and is large scale is Hook & Hackle or HookHack.com. They will ship for free if the order is over 35.00. Good luck.

ps I know what you mean about shipping. I once tried to get Fe$^*er-Cr(ft to give me a break on shipping since what I wanted would fit in an envelope. I was told "no exceptions". Conversation went down hill from there.

A couple months ago, I ordered fly rod blank and components from Hook and Hackle and the Priority Mail package came smashed. The rod blank was in a cloth case and was fine, but the components were in a separate bag in the shipping container and they were missing. I called H&H and the components were shipped that afternoon, I received them in 3 days. Always had outstanding customer service, first used them in the mid 90's.

I usually buy from ftd, I am mostly a warm water fisherman as well, they have really nice dubbing and flash, the congo hair is pretty good as well, oh and the eyes are a great deal.

I try to buy locally if at all possible. I do use Feather Craft. I also use Jann's Netcraft and Barlow's, mainly for hooks and spinner bait skirts and skirt layers(sili legs). Both also carry some fly fishing materials. They also carry what I think of as "standard" soft foam popper bodies, and I find eyes to be a bit cheaper. One thing I can't find anymore is white Spey hackle.

Spey hackle, as in marabou?

Give Portland Fly Shop, Portland OR, or Avid Angler in Seattle WA a call. I travel all over the country and the NW seems to have the best Spey marabou.

Try Little River Outfitters in Townsend, Tennessee. Well stocked, good prices, fast service. Just google them.
