  1. Ponds are great water features. Unfortunately I had to change mine around to a pondless waterfall feature. When I had the pond a going some little critter would drown weekly, so now it only runs with water when I am around and generally entertaining. Your back yard bonsi garden looks fabolous and you must be some proud!
  2. Still use them flytire. A heck of a lot more affordable than RX sunglasses. You are very generous as always
  3. Nice! Looks like a beautiful spot to fish!
  4. Hope you get better soon Mike, and back on the forum!
  5. I absolutely love fishing for grayling:
  6. My all time fav has to be the goddard caddis.
  7. Buddy, I just got control of my diabetes in the past 5 years. Visit the tretna specialist every 3 months. Sounds like you had laser treatment which I've had 3 times on my right eye ( good eye ) in the past year. Has stabilized now, for the time being. I feel for you. When I have treatment I have to stay inside out of sun or bright lights for 3 days until the drug wears off or you will sunburn from the inside out. I feel for you. Take care Doug
  8. A really good friend of mine was a taxidermist, now retired. I would go in on Saturdays and shoot the shit with him for a few hours and walk out with all sorts of his scraps and cuttoffs. Great source of materials Doug
  9. I did a cruise similar to that a few years back. Pretty decent but the thing I soon realized was that our boat or iteninary didn't stop for very long in each port. Some snorkelling and shopping was about all I could get in.
  10. Started tying at 6. At that time I used an ultralight spinning rod. By the time I was 8 I was able to cast a proper fly rod to varying degrees. Just found my first fly rod (Wright & Mcgill) and reel in one of dads closets.
  11. Thanks, I got them too. Those are good books - used to just pick and choose but you would have to know the name of the fly or tyer to google it. Now I've got the set. Thanks again, Doug
  12. I looked at your website. Your knives are certainly artwork!
  13. Mark, Love the microscope Thinking of putting an old dental microscope in my unit
  14. My Hobby Room! Six months ago yuou could not even see the floor, let alone find any thing. So time for a massive organization. Start with the closet This stuff still has to be sorted, but it was the way I kept most of my materials Took out the 10 foot closte rod and bought 2 hotel baggage carts, one for hunting, one for fishing. Much easier to sort and easily find stuff Materials Cabinit Everything sorted, labeled, entered in the laptop, and printed hard copy Actual Desk Took a sheet of 3/4 in birch ply, ripped her in half, screwed, glued and varathaned. Rests on 2 Lee Valley cast legs. The hook bank and side and top storage storage came later (not varathaned} Hook Bank My most commonly used hooks, Mustad, Tiemco, Diachi, Partridge, Galec Supreme. Thought when I built it that I could even store beads her and I can't even get all my hooks in! All hooks are labeled, entered in the laptop, and printed hard copy Rod Building Stuff Top Row: Glue Binder, Homemade Rod Wrapping Jig Mid Row: Planing Forms] Router Bench Top: Mini Lathe, Power Roughing / Tapering Beveller Projects on the go: My power tools are just stored here. Work with these in the garadge. final planing, and rod wrapping are done inside on the desk hense the size of it Reloading Bench: Now this is interesting, its actually my first fly tying bench that my dad and I built when I was about 10 years old. Guess I outgrew it! Now repurposed into loading bullets Book Shelf The complete tour and we are back to the closet. Biggest hastle was the computerization and labelling. But I'm Glad its done OR almost done AND NOW FOR MY FIRST FLY IN OVER # YEARS. I basically gave it up when I was diagnosed with macular degeneration. It is possible but painfully slow. This bug took me over an hour to tie. Keep on trucking "The Zug Bug" Doug
  15. This is what I'm using quite a bit for LT these days. This tube fly I bought from Dave Trimble (he uses them for mako sharks) for the pattern and the way they are tied. Go to colors for me are flo red dorsal, charruse ventral, overall length about 8 inches. Because I release all but a small shore lunch fish, I find it much easier to look at just the hooks than the whole fly in the mouth
  16. PS: If using lead core keep the mono leader short 4 - 5 feet
  17. YUP, been up to Great Bear Lake NWT more than 1/2n a dozen times over the years. Found that lead core line with a 20# mono leader was the best on a mooching reel, and I go big a 13wt 8' custom fly rod. Truly a trolling rig for big lakers. We occasionally see small pods of 6 - 10 lb fish on the surface and for that I use an 8 wt standard set up, floating line, 9' leader, topped with a clouser. Gun the boat, cut the motor, coast in and start casting - now thats FUN! About a 15 lb Red Fin, casting a clouser About a30 lb Grey, trolling. My best is 45#, but I can't find the pic on this computer. All the Best, Doug
  18. For stillwater which I mainly fish now, this bug:
  19. Very generous to some lucky soul Norm. Unfortunately I have more hooks than I would ever use.
  20. What I use is dental surgical binocular loops, in 2.5x or 3.5x, clip ons becfause I use glasses for everything elese. They can be as expensive as you want to go, but the ones I use for fishing cost around 50 bucks. Invaluable for tie flies to your leader. Doug
