January Flies from The Vise

working salt water flies this week while my eye heals after minor surgery

Olive surf candy- hook- Mustad 3407DT, thread-mono, white and olive bucktail with lateral line flash body covered with tubing, eyes added and UV covered

R&W Seaducer- hook- Mustad 3407DT, thread-white nylon, 4 white hackle tails with lateral line flash, body - 2 white and 1 red wound hackles

A few more

Deceiver Variant; hook-Mustad 3407DT, thread-white nylon, tail-small clump of white bucktail supporting 4 white hackle feathers with lateral line flank

body- pearl body braid, wing-blue bucktail over yellow bucktail, throat-white bucktail long as wing, head- red collar 3-d eyes, top of head -blue sharpie to match top wing, UV topcoat

Bunny eel: hook- Mustad 3407DT, thread- black nylon, tail black bucktail support with black magnum rabbit strip and black bucktail top support tied full body length 

head- red collar for gills covered with body tube, 3-d eyes, covered with UV topcoat   note tail if longer than intended will trim to swimming length while testing

Clouser's for the surf

hook- Mustad 3407DT, thread- white nylon, dumbbell eyes tied on top (fly will ride hook point up), body- body braid color of your choice, wing- bucktail colors of your choice, flash is optional. notes my most productive colors have been white/red, white/chartreuse, and purple/black I use a sharpie to color match top of head to bucktail

please advise me of any color choices that you find productive.

Interesting proportions...which is typical of the Mirimachi system. Very nice Norm.

Thought I'd make a fly in honor of my stepson's relatively new band, Bargain Biscuit. I used scrap deer hair and a bit of yarn left over from tying up a bunch of serendipities, and a stray, misplaced hook.  

Here's the fly:

All great ties so far this month. This one is for the Rocky and Bullwinkle swap. I'm calling it a "Moosquirrel".

Hook: Size 16 standard dry fly

Thread: Rusty brown UTC. 70 den

Wing: Squirrel tail

Tail: Moose hock

Abdomen: Moose mane. One white and one black. 

Collar: Whiting natural dun saddle.
