Mop Fly Variant

Denduke what size hooks are you using on the smaller mops?

Mike lots of great colors...have you tried any of the Bernat Blanket Yarn yet.

I was wondering how to keep the end from unraveling?

Nope I just discovered it the other day from another thread on an other site. Im gonna go look for it tomorrow at Hobby Lobby & Michaels.

I would imagine just a little drop of Goop or CA glue would stop it from unraveling.

Furl that yarn. Tie down the two ends. All a mop is, is thick fluffy chenille furled. If you want to tie in a straight piece, melt the end.

Finally got my mini mop floaters done.

These two are the first of the large mop flies. They're 2 1/2 to 3 inches long. I've got to dye some for the other colors I plan to tie.

I'd brought a skein of white chenille on sale. So I took Fisherboy's suggestion and furled four strands of it. Need to tighten the furling up a bit. I don't think it's the same material as the mop pieces. I've got some sitting in dye right now. If it takes the dye then it's not the same type of material.

Very nice mini's Philly, and alot of color variations (are you dying them?)

Huge tails on the large ones and I'm liking all the foam heads.

Great looking furled tails...Fisherboy was right on target with his suggestion.

I might try it too with longer mop strand and tighten up with some tear mender.

fshng2,

What wire do you use to make those shanks? I've been thinking about trying to make my own.

.024 dia Stainless Steel, I get mine in coiled lengths at either Cabelas or Lure Parts Online.

This size bends very easily and is plenty strong.

Check out the DIY Shanks on this site for more info http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=86861&hl=

The green, fluorescent orange and cream/yellow are "natural" colors. The pink, olive and tan are dyed. The rest are colored with permanent markers. I like the articulated ones, never thought of doing that.

GC59, I don't think they'll foul and I know they catch fish. You might want to use a larger hook with that size mop piece. My long ones are tied on a size 4 Gamakatsu BS10 stinger hook and part of the mop piece is glued to the shank. I like the perch pattern. I've been thinking about doing it but haven't gotten around to doing it.

Yeah something like that Mike. Just stuck at home today and trying to utilize some of the materials I received in the Mop Swap Materials swap I was in.

😉

Some Mop & Eye Lash yarn.
