Philly 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2018 Not quite the last of my mop flies, still have some bass ones to do.. These are a couple I tied with some of the pieces I received in the swap. The hardest one to come up with were the large black pieces. I settled on what maybe a dragonfly nymph or some sort of creature. The second hardest was the blue but the obvious solution was some floating damsel flies. The silky yellow and the silver gray were easy. Just what has become my standard subsurface and floating mop fly. When I treated the silver gray floating ones with a liquid floatant, they turned a dark grey, so I'm not sure how much of the silver highlights will show when they're wet. fshng2 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2018 Thanks Mike and your welcome. Finished an eelie from each material I recently posted, grey one is what you sent. Top two materials are the quickest to work with. Philly those are some real nice MoPs. I have more to do too, with some new ideas still on the drawing board. What material did you use for the backs of those first ones? Eelies Hook: Owner 1/0 Mosquito

Swamp Fly 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2018 Bet they cast just fine on a 6wt or less depending on the rod. Those hooks are "small" 1/0s, very light wire too. With a weed guard they must be murder on bass in the pads. Nice ties. But how do they cast? Looks like 10wt territory to me.
fshng2 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2018 Thanks and yes you are right Swamp Fly they will cast just fine as they are not that big. I put them on the scale and they weigh in at 1/2 a gram, just a pinch more than the hook. The light wire 1/0 mosquito hooks weigh .375 gram (the nickel weighs 5 grams) I can routinely throw a 3 gram fly 55/60 feet. As for catching bass, I haven't tried fishing with them yet. I like how the tail wags so I imagine they will do well.

When my son was very young I would bring my fly rod, he would bring his spinning rod and bobber. We would both catch fish and use flies.

Then I pressed MOP transfer/Art Deco foil against it which gives it that sparkle. I do the same thing with my popper bodies. Think loco foam. I often use the sticky back foam. For my crease flies, I'll first press some tulle either, pearl or silver to give me a scale pattern, and then the foil on top of it.
Philly 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2018 Finally finished up the last mop flies I plan to tie for now. Time to move on to some poppers and sliders. This will be one of my bass boxes, figure they'll work for chain pickerel also. Same basic patterns I've been tying, just a bit bigger.
fshng2 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2018 Crazy Charlie MoP Style It is said the original pattern used just a few simple materials. Materials such as beads chain eyes from a military dog tag and a pair of chicken feathers, similar to the second pic. This is likely how it would look if MoP's were available and used. Philly nice full fly boxes. Keep us posted how your MoP's work out on your upcoming trip to the Poconos.
Philly 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2018 I had to look up the Crazy Charlie. It was created in 1977. Original name was the "Nasty Charlie" Leigh Perkins of Orvis changed the name of the fly to "Crazy Charlie", with the originator's permission, when it was added to the Orvis catalog. I always thought it was designed to imitate a shrimp, turns out it was designed to imitate a glass minnow. I'll keep ya'll posted. Though the long range weather forecast doesn't look good. Looks like I'll have to pack my rain gear.
