Mike West 0 Report post Posted April 8, 2018 Mike your yarn does look similar to the magnum dragon tail. I would be interested to know how it casts too. I have some similar stuff in several colors, I might do some experimenting. Nice MoP hoppers too. I'm not sure why your not happy with them, I think they look awesome. Henry Denson "That brown one almost looks like a small mouse." Yep put a mouse tail under that MoP and see what the monsters think. The only reason Im not happy with them is there are too many steps and take too long to tie,I think I have it figured out but I broke the foam twice stretching it. And thats on that picture of the three I just posted they were post to have foam underneath the body also . If you want some of that Mop/Dragon tail material just let me know and Ill throw it in with the Aprils fools swap stuff for you. Think I owe you a Spook also youll get that with the swap. Edit: Thank you for the props also guys
Mike West 0 Report post Posted April 8, 2018 I really like Bass Eelie Is that furled? Thanks Mike. The fish are going to Hop on that Hopper. I like how the antennae seem to grow out of the head like the naturals. The Bass Eelie is not furled but rather retwisted. First the blue MoP is cut long then untwisted. The mid point has a 3" section of mono looped around it and the tag ends are snugged up and held in my tying vise. Then a very very sparing dot of tear mender is applied to #1 leg of the MoP. A dot of TM is applied only in the valley of #1 leg and only every other valley. Lastly the MoP is rewound making sure #2 leg follows #1 leg valleys, where TM is. I put a bulldog clip on the tags of the MoP and a weight to apply tension, then let it dry about 10 minutes. After drying I remove the mono and it's ready to tie on a hook MoP style. Notes: 1. Tear Mender will not unravel in water. According to the specs Two pieces of fabric bonded in an over-lay manner cannot be pulled apart after 3 minutes. In 15 minutes that same bond is permanent and will not wash out. 2. The Cinder MoP-Worm did not use tear mender as it is a single untwisted MoP. I read this about three times now and still not grasping what you’re doing . How about a couple quick pics on how you deal with that Mop tail and untwist it and re twist with the mono and all that. Don’t need a full SBS just the tail/body and how you do that.

Yea send some Mop/Dragon tail material and I'll give it a try. I am anxious to try the Spook. I'll put something together for the Bass Eelie.

If you tied it on a 4/0 hook the hook would look small Ha Ha. I'll experiment with the yarn and post what I come up with in this thread.
Philly 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2018 Finally finished up my mini-mop fly box and my generic trout/pan fish box. Still working on my bass box. Nothing fancy.

Philly 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2018 Very nice work Philly, you have quite a few colors there. I will be shipping these to my Brother tomorrow. That's a pretty nice collection you've got there. I tied them in as many colors as I could think of. Mainly just to see which catch the most fish. I leaning toward chartreuse, pink, red, fluorescent yellow, white and maybe olive. What's your brother going to be fishing for?
fshng2 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2018 Thanks Philly. What hooks are you using for the mini's? He mostly fishes for trout from Mid/W Pa to NE Pa. FYI I don't know if you can tell from the pic, but the left side 5th row down has gray and shiny satin silver. I'm thinkin the silver MoP will get their attention as it reflects light from the sun. I also threw in some #8 chunky foam indicators on the last row that have no problem floating a 3.8 mm tungsten bead.
Mike West 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2018 Mini Mops... these were on the end of a clicker pen. The cashier at the store couldnt stand them so she let me snatch them. These are going to make perfect Bream Mop flies.

fshng2 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2018 Bass Eelie Body Here you go Mike. Start by pulling out a long continuous strand of MoP material and untwist it. I pulled out 4 segments. Find the center point of the material. Apply a very very sparing dot of tear mender in the valleys of the material. Tear mender is only applied to one half of the MoP (right side in the example at 8 places). Too much tear mender and the end product will not be as limp. To control the amount of TM I use; I first put some on a flat surface. Then I dip a toothpick in the TM and wipe the toothpick on the MoP material. Note: This stuff sets up fast so keep moving at a quick pace. 1. Wrap or fold the MoP material over a length of mono and secure it in a vise. I used 40# test but anything you can clamp in a vise will work to wrap the MoP around. I even thought about using some stainless wire I had. 2. Clamp the tag ends of the MoP in a vise grip and wind it up. A bulldog clip and weight can also be used. 3. While keeping the Material in tension lay it and the vise grip on the bench until dry. 10 minutes should be sufficient for drying time. I originally used my tying vise. This time I decided to use a small shop vise and save my tying vise for smaller projects. Pull the mono free and the finished body is now ready to be tied on a hook MoP style. Trim the tail to a taper with serrated scissors, color the back with black marker, and glue on the eyes. Future Project. I plan to make similar eelies from the following craft store chenille. The top two are as thick as the blue eelie and can be used as is. Certainly a more practical approach than making a body from MoP material. Thanks for the top one Mike. The bottom two will have bodies constructed like the blue eelie.
Philly 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2018 Fshng2. I had a couple packs of size 10 Gamakatsu bonefish hooks that I'd brought and never really used for anything. I tied the bead head mini-mops on those and used a size 10 BS10 stinger hook for the floating ones. I'm going to be headed up to the Poconos on May 19th for week. The house is on a small lake, caught quite a few rock bass, a smallie and a largemouth on mop flies last year. Plan to fish them more aggressively this year. I guess I should tie up some with those silver mop pieces I got in the swap. I like that Eelie. I'll have to give it a shot.
fshng2 0 Report post Posted April 18, 2018 Thanks for the info Philly. Enjoy your trip, great place to fish. The last time I fished the Poconos was over 30 years ago.
fshng2 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2018 Eelie Mike I finally got a chance to tie the Ginormous material you sent on a 4/0 hook. Tip: 1. I found that if you tie the material to one end of a swivel and clamp the other end of the swivel in a vise it's much easier to trim. As you finish tapering one side turn the swivel 90 degrees. Each time one side is done turn 90 degrees until you have four flat sides that are all the desired taper you want. Round all the edges until you are satisfied. 2. When building the head section keep wraps of material close together and tight. This makes for a head that is easy to trim and will keep it's shape. 3. I think a flexible baitfish could also be constructed using this material. I plan to do testing soon to find out if it swims like a Dragon Tail.
