  1. I like it - reminds me of Lafontaine's "Mess", although different. Pretty, too.
  2. Nicely tied. Do they like the purple? Michael
  3. Wow, I thought those Eastern Oregon fish were a conservative bunch, shows what I know... Michael
  4. Looks very good. Like the name (for those of you back east, they store nuclear waste at Hanford). Michael
  5. Very nice. Each time I pull up this forum I am inspired by somebodies fine work, like this. thanks, Michael
  6. In this company, my flies would be the ones to fish! I am going to try them in April, for the green caddis hatch on the Mckenzie River (OR), my home water. The flies name (McKenzie) makes me wonder if it derives from the river (or some old Scot named Mckenzie)? thank you for hosting. Michael
  7. Claudia, that blue spey is beautiful. Thanks folks for the kind words. I am not sure if I spend more time at the vise, or on this forum, it has been very helpful. Michael
  8. I've only been tying for six months or so, but here a few from the last couple days: A deer/cdc ala Hans W., for the caddis swap a little biot nymph a stonefly a mayfly and a funny little (size 10) mini-streamer inspired by some hornbergs I saw on GFF. it has a holo-tinsel body, a little flash, a soft grizzly hackle, the rest is ringneck. regards, Michael

    SNOW!

Schools are closed here with 2 inches of snow (we don't see a lot of it, and it is 20 deg and slick) Michael just north of Eugene, Oregon
  10. I'm interested, with a cdc deer. Michael
  11. There are actually two things I do with photos (as all web designers do), resize and optimize. Say your digital camera produces a 2200x1400 pixel image - most computer screens display roughly 100 pixels per inch, so there is not much use sending a picture more than about 1000-1200 pixels wide (or people will have to horizontally scroll the image to view, or their browser will resize it, loosing any advantage. That is the resize. Then out of the camera, the image file size might be 2.5 Mb, or 2500 Kb - optimizing packs that information tighter (mostly by giving one name to all identical pixels, rather than an individual name), and shrinks that 2500 Kb to say 250 Kb, without noticeable degradation of the image quality. There are a number of programs out there that do both, usually in one step. In my experience Macromedia Fireworks is the best at it, but others also good. Most images can also benefit from some cropping. A shortcut for the less techy- nearly all digital cameras can be set for various image size and quality results, doing essentially the same thing in the camera - although in absolute terms maybe not quite as well, but certainly well enough. Michael
  12. I'm working on them. Will get them off in time, and have plenty of practice ones to fish. Michael
  13. very nice, thanks for the instructions, will have to tie a few. Michael
  14. Beautiful fly, looks like one I'd like to fish around here (Oregon), so I would like to see more photo's too, if possible. Michael
  15. How could a steelhead resist such a plump tasty bite? Nice. Michael
  16. Thanks, my eyes are not as they were, and I like the idea of a 'cat eyed' streamer. Re GITD - I wonder how steelhead would respond. Any tidbits and tips appreciated. Michael
  17. Great idea. Out of severe constraints, sometimes great things come. I'll paw around in my humble mess of chicken and duck feathers, but I am really curious to see what some of you with exotic plumage come up with (if you can tear yourselves away from those beautiful classics). I would have disallowed dyeing, (but now I am trying to figure out how to tie dye a schlappen feather...) Michael
  18. Nice. Looks like it would work well in my neck of the woods. Michael
  19. Well, Put me down as TBD pending further research. What I am thinking about is the winged wet version of a Ginger Quill, as seen at the bottom of this page, http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/o...ies/part420.php,(note the different wing from photo at top of page) and similar to the Black Quill, as here: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/o...ies/part421.php, which also has some interesting thoughts on Bergmans flies. I gather hook possibilities include: size 6 or 8 mustad 3906, 3906B,3399 - diiachi 1550. 1560 1530(heavy),- tiemco 3761 or 5269, 3769 - partridge G3A. Does anyone have a favorite hook for these flies? regards, Michael
  20. Well, after reading Old Hat's "first winged wet" post, I am encouraged to give it a try. I'll have to poke around for a used copy of "Trout", but in the meantime can I assume a "more traditional' tying of a Ginger Quill qualifies? This would be a good next project for my fly tying education (and pardon in advance to the experienced tiers), and I enjoy the aesthetics of these flies. regards, Michael
