  1. Wonderful writing David, very graphic. You should write fishing novells, mixing up your writing with ha few well matched photos and that should become quite something!
  2. Good one! I have been known (okay,,, I try to remain unknown) to shuck a few feathers off a road killed bird or two. And I definitely pick up the odd bit of stuff that I find in my travels. I often reach into a pocket and find some hairly little wad of stuff I plucked off of some barbed wire or a feather tucked into a pocket of my gadget bag or my fly bag. I think one of the funnier moments came when I whipped the car off the road and ran back to strip some tiny shoulder feathers from a fallen bird. After returning to the car, my friend Joe said, "don't you worry that might make you sick?" My unpracticed reply was "I just shucked a bunch of feathers off a hunk of bloody road kill... a lot of people would argue that that's proof I'm already sick!" lmao pure genious David :hyst: Myself I haven't plucked any roadkill so far. At least I can't recall anything like it, maybe I have an opressed memory of the roadkill haunting me. But as long as you don't handle it to much before freezing, and you freeze it thoroughly there shouldn't be any problems involved. Except the haunting..
  3. Cool stuff Thanks for the pics David. I was fumbled by the fatty pupas too, but a lead shot. Yeah that should do the trick. I'm surprised though there aren't any sparkle pupas in the collection. Or is it the lead shot flies that are the sparkle pupas?
  4. I never use chemicals, with two exceptions. Superglue (cyanoacrylate) and epoxy. I always try to be restrictive with chemicals as there's always a risk of them damaging your fly inreversably. I use the superglue for adding strengh to specific steps when tying a fly such as when winding on lead foil. I don't like the sticky back lead foil since its sticky back tends to float out through the fly and ruin the body... I pretty much always finish my flies off with a couple of good whips, save beadheaded flies. In that case I put some superglue on the thread and wind a few wraps with it, much neater than whipfinishing. I use epoxy mainly for saltwater and seatroutflies simply for the looks of them. I don't just coat the final thread windings, but the entire head on a baitfish for example. Or maybe I coat the entire back of a shrimp with epoxy. It is of more visual purposes (and of course durability) compared to superglue. Both are applied with a common metal bodkin.
  5. Welcome clockman. I'm sure you will find plenty of information and useful posts here to help you out
  6. I started tying about 4-5 years ago.. quite spontaneously really, just felt for a new way to be creative and remembered an old fishing magazine with a test of newbie-kits for flytying. Now I can't stop it! :jumpy:
  7. I prefer pinching the barb down. Then you can tie on any model of hook you like (compared to barbless) Filing the barb down I wouldn't say is necessary.
  8. I can really recommend Scierras flytying bag, I use one myself and it eats pretty much anything! I'm a rather crazy flytier with lots of materials and I can still stuff some more into the bag. The quality och the velcro on the tubes and boxes is rather poor, other than that though this is a great product.
  9. I think you've got a point there :hyst: Myself I use dental floss threaders. For my C&F bobbin I use the included C&F threader.
  10. All types of flyfishing is fun! I don't dedicate ridiculous amounts of time to the dry fly, neither the wet fly or the nymph. What I choose depends on the circumstances and my mood. Personally I think the entire trend of trying to fish with the dry as much as possible is a little pestered really. Nymph fishing can be at least as exciting, oh yeah! I like the focus it requires, the challenge and intimacy to the prey it offers and how effective and rewarding it can be. Hang me if you like to, but I say dryflyfishing is rather lazy compared to nymphing :innocent: Not the fisherman that is, but the fishing itself. There is often a lot more going on down there, rather than on the surface of the water. Still though, dry flyfishing can be loads of fun too, there's no denying of it. You just need an open mind to enjoy both of these kinds of flyfishing!
  11. Very nice flies. Also it was fun to see some other patterns not just imitating insects, but even reptiles
  12. Excellent tie, thanks for sharing
  13. I love the french style flies, they are so elegant. Nicely tied Dessaigne Not to mention the photograph, I really like how the flies are levitating.
  14. That's a tiny neat fly. Does it imitate some kind of baetis mayfly? What are the wings made of by the way?
  15. I use the Snowbee Waldron, and I had the Anvil Atlas prior to that. I think both are great vises, but the Snowbee Waldron is definitely a cut above. The things I liked best about the Anvil carry over to the Snowbee Waldron, and it has better holding power for large hooks. It also has even better rotation, and can be converted to an in-line tube vise with an inexpensive upgrade, which I like. Sounds great, thanks for the info!
  16. Delicious, excellent scud imitation
  17. I'm using an Anvil Atlas true rotation vice now and has done so for about 3-4 years. A good tool, but I am longing for a vice with even more hook-holding power and a rotationsystem of higher quality. So far I'm thinking of upgrading with a Snowbee Waldron vice. Anyone of you in possession of one, please tell me what you think of it.
  18. Inspired by smalliefanatic, I decided to tie myself a hatching danica variant Thanks Jan!
  19. Quite often when I like a pattern I say that I'm going to tie one (more or less straight away I guess), this one actually made me do it It's going to be a variant though based on the same concept.
  20. Awesome fly. I have never tried these double bodied flies out but they should do well for the hatches. A SBS would be lovely
  21. Looks like it has TMCs cutting hook point, should be good stuff with other words. Nice pupas btw
