  1. When I think of a travel bag for fly tying material, I am not thinking stream side. I am thinking of classes and tying groups where you don't know what you'll be needing. I've got a really good shop close to me, The Orlando Outfitters, that holds a "tie-in" once a week. I am also thinking of the time I spend on the road in hotels, and the flies I might tie there.
  2. I don't know about an actual assortment of hooks, but there are plenty of posters that show all the different hook styles on one page. Just type in "fly fishing hooks" on your browser, then hit the "images" button and you'll have all the choices you want.
  3. I did see a large trout, maybe a 40 pound Brookie, sitting in a Lazi-boy recliner watching football. He was eating these stoneflies out of a box like they were chips. I wasn't going to ask him if they were his, he looked like a bruiser !!! Just kidding, of course. I hope some honest person finds them and you get them back.
  4. If you start feeling really light on your feet, watch out, the wind is carrying you away. You guys are impressing me. I know it takes a lot of will power to lose weight like this. Keep it up and hit that mark!!!
  5. Lost ... Boutdoors was selling a travel kit, and might still be. Look in the Trading Floor forum ... I think he wanted 50 for it.
  6. OH, Geeze !!!! MY stomach hurts, my jaws hurt .... I'll be laughing about this for a few weeks !!! Thank you, Oldtrout.
  7. Nice pictures. Really nice fish. Good to see the reds are doing so well!
  8. The thumbnails look pretty good ... I can't see them better since I can't open pictures that large.
  9. Holy Smokes !!! If I could wrap thread that quickly, I'd definitely be tying professionally !!! Hell, I'd be going on "America's most Talented". But that's a fly I am going to tie up for this Spring's bass pre-spawn (albeit a tad slower). Nice looking bug/fish.
  10. While agreeing with you on all you say, Perch ... I have to slightly debate the statement that only cloth/natural material eating bugs will be problematic. Since most of our materials are still attached to parts of skin, all manner of bugs can be involved. If the "meat" of the skin or hide is allowed to get wet, then one might also get flies and their offspring, maggots. I don't know if there are any flies that eat meat products and are as small as fruit flies, but couldn't that be possible?
  11. Spread some baby powder, fine corn starch or foot powder in the bottoms of drawers, shelves or any other place you keep your materials. Any insects that get into the powder breathe it in. The breathing holes (spiricules, I think they are called) get clogged and the insects die. This works for the tiny bugs like dust mites, too.
  12. Thank you, Agn. The pictures are great and the flies look "mahvelous"!!!
  13. Whoooo hoooo !!! Way to go Fred !!! I take back all suggestions I've made about any of your patterns !!!
  14. NOW you're cooking with gas !!! I like the folded version !!!
  15. Streamers of any kind, like deceivers and clousers for bass ... hard to beat when you know the bass are there. There are noiseless flies, which doesn't make them good search lures, but if you're sure the bass are there, then the old rule applies, "bigger baits for bigger fish". I am using them more and more for search baits too, but I just can't build my confidence in them when I know a topwater will bring them from several feet away.
  16. That fish looks weird ... skinny. Could just be the net, but since I can't open it (too big at 2MB) I can't tell for sure.
  17. Ooooooo, Shiny!!! My wife saw them, and would like a pair of earrings like those (thank you, very much), Tidewaterfly, so please post a recipe or SBS for these.
  18. One of those early poets or philosophers once wrote, "When the revolution begins, shoot the lawyers first." Glad you aren't a lawyer, Scott. Nice work on the hair/flash holder. Compact area you've got there. I do have two questions, to which I hope the answers are no: Is the swordfish a bodkin? Is the pink octopus on the wall one of your fly designs?
  19. You are correct, sir ... I love the colors. With those rocks and the lights, this tank is looking Puurrrrrrfect!
  20. your flies become "scented" then.. Does that make them stink bait for catfish, then? Or berry scented for carp?
  21. Semper Fi to your son ... and for making it through hell week, OOH RAH Devil Dog !!!
  22. This is ugly, but I modified your picture to draw the changes I'd recommend. While in the military, I spent a lot of time around salt water ... maybe that's why I don't like it so much now. What I obsserved was this: Fiddler crabs, like most crabs, only spread their claws wide for display purposes. While they might do this to fend of an attack from a large fish, it's more likely they tuck and run to get away. So, the claw would be more correct if folded in front of the crab. And if the crab IS fleeing, they always swim so the claw presents the least drag, with the claw trailing the "elbow" , so the hook would be reversed. So here's the ugly picture for an example.
  23. Okay ... now it's my turn to be the dummy. First off, are your buddies trolling under power? Or are you just drifting with lines out? If you are under power, it seems to me that you'll have to hold the reel the whole time to keep from stripping all the line out. Also, I've found, with several people on a boat, somebody is going to get hooked if you are fly fishing while everyone else is fishing differently. You'll be very limited to where you can cast because you'll need to be aware of everyone else all the time. Isn't trolling with a fly rod kind of like ... fly fishing with a baitcaster? They are two different kinds of fishing because they both work in different situations. I am just being curious here, and like the original post, not trying to get under anyone's skin.
