  1. Why not use a non slip loop knot? Wouldn't you get a the same range of motion?
  2. I'm constantly out in sussex county fishing, matter of fact I was out there yesterday. Will definitely let you know next time I'm heading out, although I may be relocating very shortly, so we'll see. The fly rod does feel weird at first - feels way too long and you feel clumsy waving it around... soon enough it'll be a extension of your arm and you wont look back to give spin fishing a second glance (at least not for trout).
  3. Are there actually contests? I haven't seen one posted since I joined (Only contest I'd have a chance at winning would be an ugly fly contest). Just curious..
  4. Freddo what county are you in? I'm in Bergen county..I only have a couple rods but wish I had seen this thread earlier as I would have offered you to try em out to help decide. I was talked into getting a 5 weight as a beginner, but now that I pretty much soley focus on trout I wish I had got a 4 weight instead - love my 3 weight for small stream wild trout
  5. Given the above, why is it assumed then that since trout have cones in their retina they then by default have color vision? What's preventing us from making the same correlaion that these cones once had a use but no longer do and they are in fact just present in fish like an appendix in humans? You're level of understanding is light years ahead of mine - so I'm asking inquisitively rather than trying to be argumentative...
  6. Nice video - still relevant regardless if production quality isnt as great as it would be today - thanks for posting Intersting that trout also have O-faces
  7. I have an apendix, a tailbone and nipples - as a male, none of those are being used..
  8. what mikechell said.... I bought a cheap bobbin when I started and because of that piece of garbage (constantly breaking my thread at various stages of the pattern) I almost quit tying before I really started. Finally got a ceramic bobbin and haven't looked back since
  9. Charlie Cravens Basic Fly Tying - Takes you gradually through 'easy' flies to more difficult flies with each pattern teaching you a new technique that will be used on the patterns later in the book. Can't recommend this book enough.
  10. You're not going to look like Arnold after working out for 2 months in the gym - you're not going to tye like Davie McPhail after two months at the vise.
  11. An alternative is to purchase an amadou fly dryer patch. It's essentially two pieces of fungus that you place the fly between..couple squeezes and the fly is dried out. I love it and use it all the time.
  12. The fly you're not sure of looks like a cone head muddler minnow - you'd do yourself a service if you picked up some double edged razor blades if you're going to be tying and trimming deer hair....makes a much cleaner and well shaped cut. For three months I'd say you're doin pretty damn well
  13. I still have my first fly tied...although it started to unravel a little. I'll have to try and photograph it when I get home.. Im still learning, but looking back it's hard to imagine messing up a Black Beauty hahaha
  14. This can be taken out of context and is quite disturbing.. I just wipe my bodkin clean in papertowl and if there is excess i use my exacto knife to cut off the build up.. I like the idea of using a lighter..will have to give that a go. I also have the Renzetti Traveler and love it. Only problem (although ive gotten used to it) is that the base can be too light at times..
  15. Wolly Bugger (all 637,000 variations), slump buster, Goblin sculpin
  16. believe it or not..mine is the GRHE. I've never caught a fish on that pattern and have zero confidence in it. It's funny too since everyone and their mother swear that it's a great pattern. Everyone once in a while I'll go back to the vise, tie up some more, and fish em again - time and time again same result.. no fish.
  17. First attempt at a Maribou wing streamer
  18. I think you can take the 'semi' out of that sentence.. those look sick - really creative way to use the wally wing..
  19. Solarez is a resin that is formulated for industrial use. Industry uses these resins as coating and glues. They use heavy duty UV lights and/or oxygen free curing ovens. Since these resins are used in large quantities, they must be relatively cheap so they don't contain the accelerators that cure the resin with low intensity battery UV light in an oxygen atmosphere. There is no need when you can cure in an O2 free oven and/or under high power lights. These resin by free radical polymerization. Oxygen binds with the free radical and blocks the polymerization. That is why the resin fails to cure at the surface which is in contact with atmospheric oxygen. You can put the flies out in the sun and eventually after a time, the resin should cure. All this to save a bit of money. Fly tiers use need a resin that CURE TACK FREE and FAST with battery powered flashlight. Some do but most don't. I have taken my resin and mixed it with CCG resin that does not cure completely and the accelerators in my resin allow the mixture to cure. Similarly, you can coat a tacky UV resin with my resin and it will cure and adhere to the resin underneath. The accelerator will detach the oxygen block and you will have a hard surface. I was hoping you would chime in.... thank you very much
  20. Kimo..that is beautiful and intriguing.. does that style affect hookups?
  21. That Solarez UV that heavynets posted is pretty damn cheap compared to everything else I've been looking at. anyone used it? pros/cons?
  22. Not the greatest video in terms of teaching how to tie the fly - specifically with the mohawk and the fins as Centerex was asking... but a decent video made better as it sounds like it's narrated by the late great Casey Kasem
