Gene L 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2023 Matt O'Neal's home water is the Savage River in Maryland...hence the channel's name. He's not the tyer that Davie McPhail but who else is? I LOVE Youtube because it's happening as you watch it.
niveker 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2023 LoL - that makes more sense. Thanks for letting me know, I'm glad it's not the Tactical River.
Gene L 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2023 O'Neal is a very good fisherman. He fishes all over, from the Savage to the Battenkill. I enjoy watching his brief videos where he fishes a fly he just tied.

Davie really makes it look so easy. When I got into fly fishing and tying I didn't know anyone who could teach me but there was youtube which was still in it's early days. I'm so thankful for it. I learned to fly cast, fly fish and tie mostly from youtube. Davie was the first guy I found showing step by step tying and how he did it. As with any master of a craft he made it look so easy that I wanted to give it a shot. What a wake up to reality my first attempts were lol. They were supposed to be PTN,s but I doubt you would recognize them as such. Fortunately I developed enough skill to catch a few fish with my flies and that inspired me to keep learning. TSMcDougald 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2023 One of the important things one learns from Davie McPhail is that you can always back up (unless you use a lot of half hitches and glue).

Great point! I learned not to use half hitches and glue until I knew what I was doing. Even now I still ask myself “do I really needs half hitch here”? 😂

Even now I still ask myself “do I really needs half hitch here”? 😂 I only use half hitches when I walk away from a fly in the vise (I have cats and learned early on it was necessary) or if I am using the rotary function on my vise. I don't think I have ever used glue. I keep telling myself that I should at least use something on the head but never seem to get around to it. The other thing I learned from McPhail is to take my time. Edited September 6, 2023 by TSMcDougald Add more

Half hitches have their place. I was thinking of some videos I have seen where the tier hal hitched or whip finished in an obsessive compulsive fashion. I think a certain amount of trust in one's skill is necessary to advance as a tier.

I find it is easier & faster, plus you get a consistent pattern tying that way with less material cluttering the bench. I learned from all commercial tiers when I started tying, they produced a durable well tied fly and wanted return customers they never spared the hitch/whip or the lacquer.
